Ultraguage Vs. cheap scan tool

Stupid Question time. I am not familiar with the ultragauge at all but have seen it mentioned on here a few times. Can you switch its use back and forth between two or more vehicles or is it "married" to the initial vehicle it is used on? I would maybe get one if it is versatile enough to use for more than one car. Other wise maybe just a cheap scanner off of amazon. Please advise.

No, it's not "married" to that vehicle. When it's first plugged in though it's going to take some minutes for it to scan and identify all sensors. That would be tedious if you were switching it frequently.

If you want "cheap" I think all you REALLY need is a paper clip and a chart to read the CEL light blink codes.

I only have one car but find it very convenient to have mine always plugged in. I have had transient "pending trouble codes" and it's nice to just pull over and read them off, rather than having to root around in the trunk for the scanner etc.

When swapping it between cars, you'll need to change the engine size and fuel tank so it can track the MPGs a little bit better.

I just got the new Ultra-gauge EM and it's got more options than the Classic does.

4th Generation

I just got my ultra-gauge classic in the mail today actually. In the menu it has options for "reset to defaults", etc. So I'm sure you can swap vehicles with it. The scan didn't take long for me (30-60s) though. The rebate procedure on this thing though is unbelievable, but I did it anyway.

I'm using it on a 97 Camry CE (it detected the protocol as 9141 instead of the KWP2000 like I thought it would). I guess that is right though, I'm a noob to this stuff. I don't even know what I'm going to use the gauge for, I just bought to look for trouble codes.

Yes, it does.

You could read up on the Ultra-gauge on their website...

I got my UG a few weeks ago and it's simply the coolest gadget for the money. I use it as a scanner and gauge monitor since all I have in the Camry is RPM's & a vague temp dial.
You can also clear codes with it as well. I don't see the reason to get the EM version since metric is pretty much useless here in the states. You get the same exact options, nothing different between the 2 except the metric conversion. Check the website and you will see what I'm talking about.

Actually, UG states that the EM "SUPPORTS" more gauges and features. But those gauges /features are not available on older Toyotas so it's basically a waste. Click on gauges on the home page and you'll see. I doubt you'll find that metric or brake horsepower or torque is of any practical use.

No it is not. The unit has to stay plugged in to keep your settings. Otherwise the unit has to upload the cars info each time it is plugged in. It would be like starting over each time.

this is what i thought of doing,

any anybody that has this any problems with attempted theft? all i have is keyless and no alarm or anything. thats why im asking

I usually have a tomtom mount on the glass in the bottom left hand corner that I haven't put back on, but I don't leave the unit in the car and have never had any issues with somebody trying to break in or anything. but I guess this has to stay plugged in.

adalex,....you can tuck the unit in your change drawer if your worried about leaving it out in the open. It's only about 3 1/2 by 2".

Not true. I've had my UG unplugged fer over 2 weeks and when I went to plug it back in...it still had all my info.

This was with the UG Classic. I'll have to try it with the UG EM...but I would think it would be the same.
