Custom Tail Lights

Alright, I had a crazy idea to photoshop an idea I had. I took a pic of a 98 camry and tried to make the tail lights custom. I thought it would be easy, but seeing as they are long skinny rectangles, I had to give up. I was wondering if any of you had any thoughts on designing such lights. I would be trying to actually fabricate them later on when I got money, time and skills to do it. I don't like how they currently look and I can't find any aftermarket ones.

Any ideas? Maybe you could tell me what kind of design you might do? Maybe you have some photoshop skills or maybe just a mock-up/design phase MSpaint shots? I know they would have to be DOT qualified... and personally, I doubt that I could get such an accreditation, but I want to give this a shot. No, I do not plan on keeping the camry, I just want to learn all I can so I can get a car I want and fix 'er up the way I want.

I've had this crazy idea of having 4 rows of leds in each brake light. The bottom two rows would act like the parking lights, while the top two rows would remain off. Like BMW style, I guess. Then when you apply the brakes, for the trunk set of lights the two top rows would turn on, while the bottom two would remain at their parking light level. And on the outer two sets of lights ( the actual brake lights ), all 4 rows of leds would light up. I'm in the process of getting the leds and stuff, but its pretty expensive, and dedicated task.

I was messing around in PSCS2 again today and figured I would give it another shot. I came up with this... don't know if I really like it though. Again, concept stages. The little circles are LEDs and the big circles are just covers with a light behind, maybe LED bulbs, but not individual like the outer edges. I want the housings to match the color of the car, but unlike in the picture, I want depth to them.

I had a whole animation made out, but when I uploaded to photobucket, it got mucked up. Was perfect before uploading... tried a few times and it still didn't work, so use your imagination LOL.

So nobody has any suggestions? I plan on making a mold of it when I can find some silicon and abs plastic at a local store. Found 25lbs of wet clay for 15 dollars.

Remember there are specific requirements fer the tail lights (rear/side reflectors and minimum light output).

A quick search of the internet can yield some good sources of ABS sheets/molding techniques.
