If your trying to shift into the other gears and its not shifting correctly, or acting like its in neutral it sounds to me as if either your clutches are going bad in the transmission, or you have something else internally wrong with the transmission. I would suggest looking into purchasing a remanufactored transmission or purchase a used transmission, or bring it to a transmission shop.

Actually, bringing it to a transmission shop is sometimes a good idea because they will be able to diagnose to you exactly what the problem is. Typically they will charge you $20.00-$50.00 for a diagnostic fee.

Good luck!

The last thing you want to do right now is take it to a transmission shop, especially one of the national chains, they want to solve your problem by selling you a new or rebuilt transmission. At this stage there is no reason to assume you need a new transmission without trying some inexpensive things.

Usually when not up shifting it's a shift valve and they're easy to replace, but first I would suggest to flush your old transmission fluid and replace with new if you have not done that in several thousands of miles, or if you don't know when the previous owner did it. Also remove the pan and clean it and the filter/screen. You should also check the wiring connections to the shift solenoids. You can also remove the shift solenoids, inspect, clean and bench test them.

If you have no mechanical ability and need to take it to a trans shop then I'd look for a local non-chain one that you can do some research on to see how honest it is. Never take just one opinion from a shop.
