Hello there, noob here. Browsing the internet for info on fixing my son's car and came across this site.
98 Camry LE V6. No start. Had the battery testing and it is putting out about 870 amps and other electrical stuff (windows, lights, etc.) work fine. Just no engine turnover. Can't really hear any starter clicking.....would like to get this thing going tomorrow and avoid towing to mechanic. Thinking bad starter but wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

5sp? Can you pop start it? I've always heard a light tapping from my starter when it wouldnt work....and I think a starter gives you clues before it dies all together.
One other quickie...make sure the are is in park, pushed up hard in park....the car will not start if it things the trans is engaged in R...which sometimes happens.
Did you try starting it in Neutral? Does the shift selector indicator work? If not, it could be a bad park neutral safety switch. There is a sticky fer cleaning the switch...
Did you check all yer fuses?

I checked voltage at the starter and nothing. I put a test lead from the starter solenoid straight to pos battery and fired right up. Ok guessing this neutral safety switch or ignition switch. What should be my next test or step? I did try to start it in neutral and no dice. I'll do some more searching here as well. Thanks!
it could be worn out starter contacts. as a test you can smack the starter cylinder under hood with a hammer (and some extension), it usually starts this way if only the contacts are bad. check all the fuses in the box, e.g. 15A EFI fuse and a few other in there under hood.
if you suspect a bad relay, then knocking on it hard can make it work/click, other than that you need to test them with multimeter and a power source (.e.g. 9V battery or car's battery).

Hey thanks BZP.....I checked the price of a neutral safety switch and yes I sincerely hope it is ok.
I did pull the 5 amp starter fuse and it is fine.
Where is the starter relay? Is it in the fuse box in the engine compartment? Not sure how to test that this other than buying a new one.
The starter relay is located in the engine bay fuse box.
The blue/purple-ish relay in the upper left corner is the starter relay...as indicated by the diagram under the fuse box cover.
Pull the relay out and test it this way. You want to check pins 1 and 2 with a multimeter. It's the solenoid connections. If it's open (no reading in ohms) then you need to replace the relay. If it reads close to 0 ohms, it's shorted and you need to replace the relay. If you apply 12V to those pins the relay will close the contacts and pins 3 and 5 will connect. With 12V connected to pins 1/2, putting yer multimeter to pins 3/5 should give you a reading close to 0 ohms or if you have it on continuity, it should beep.
