Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
94 Camry V6 auto, 170K, daughter's college car...Right after all the rain we had from the hurricane a few weeks ago, she said it was running rough and the ck engine light came on, I figured it got wet.
She's home so I took it to Advanced and Autozone to get the code read, both said it was OBD1 and they could not do it. Since the car seemed to run ok and I'm impatient, I pulled the neg battery terminal and reset the light. Then I come in here and read that it's really OBDII if it's a V6.
Did I mess anything up by doing this and is there a certain driving routine I need to follow to get cat and evap systems to show ready?
I did the same thing to my 4runner last year when I over filled the gas tank and the light came on. After I pulled the cable I could not get it to pass emitions because it kept saying cat and evap not ready. I had to drive 10 miles @55 and then turn it off and I don't remember exactly but it was specific.
you did not hurt anything at the most you erased any stored codes. The V6 may be OBDII compliant, look near the fuse block in the left lower dash for the OBDII connector. The you can show the AutoZone people that the books aint always correct. As far as the drive cycle thing, sorry can't help you there. Although if you don't need to do an emissions any time soon then all monitors should be ready by the time you do.
The Following User Says Thank You to Pvt-Public For This Useful Post:
If your car is indeed OBD2,...than the port to connect the scanner is behind your change drawer next to the fuse box. You have to take out the drawer to see it,...it is on the left side of your lower dash.
I can't say for sure if your car is indeed OBD2. I thought only the 95 1/2 camrys were actually OBD2 compliant. You can double check this by opening the hood and reading the sticker that is attached on the underside of the front part of the hood. On the bottom of the sticker should say if it is OBD1 or 2.
Not sure why the parts store couldn't hook an OBD1 scanner to your car,....they should have that tool.
all monitors should set on their own in a few days of driving. however I know that 94-96 V6 very VERY picky on the catalyst monitor test. you can make it complete by following a VERY specific and precise driving pattern (gen4 are much easier on that), there were a few threads about it, look for posts by 73sport, he figured it out and described what needs to be done exactly.
94 V6 should be OBD2, look for OBD2 scanner port behind the coin drawer on the left of steering wheel. once you know it's there, just show it to Autozone employees and ask to hook up a scanner to it even though their book says it won't be compatible (it will work).

I did find that thread but the links to the info were dead. I have another issue now that superceeds this one...I screwed something up for sure this time...I'll make a new thread...
Hi,
I could not get it to pass emitions because it kept saying cat and evap not ready. I had to drive 10 miles @55 and then turn it off and I don't remember exactly but it was specific.
Thanks,
D
If you disconnect the battery, you need to drive close to 120miles for the cat/evap to reset. I had an emission failed because the battery was completely dead for a week and i swapped the battery and took it to the inspection (less than 4 miles). They told me to drive for 120 miles and after that it passed like a charm.
^ it's not about distance, it's about doing a specific drive patterns. I can make all monitors, except EVAP, set complete in less than 10 miles actually.
EVAP monitor however requires a few engine restarts and cold soaking in between (e.g. staying shut off over night), no other way around it.
