fuel injector replacement price

Camry LE 99 4 cylinder 2.2liter engine. 200000 miles

The check engine light I posted on earlier came back flashing today with a rough engine so I finally had it checked out. The codes were there this time and were misfire in cylinder 1 and system too lean I believe.

The tech says fuel injector 1 is bad. They want me to replace injector, replace spark plug tube seal, and replace valve cover gasket.

Cost was 90 dollars for inspection. Cost for repairs will be another 740-750 big ones. 200 for parts 500 labor

They say other injectors don't need to be replaced but if I want to be on the safe side they could do it for another 400-500 bucks.

What do you think of this price?

I looked around the injector they said was bad. There was some oil around there. Do you think cleaning it might possibly help the problem and would this be a simple procedure?

What are the risks of continuing to drive since they can't repair today? How long/far do you think I can get away with driving it?

Thanks

RUN away from that mechanic. 90$ for a diagnosis is stupid high.

750 to replace an injector is a crime. If in correct injector is about 80$ new and at most 1hr/ 100$ to install. That mechanic is trying to bend you over big time.

With the car running take long screwdriver and touch one end on each injector and handle end to your ear. You'll hear them clicking. If one sounds way off then the other 3 its bad.

Also, if valve cover and spark plug tube seals and leaking there's a good chance it might just be oil in the plug tube causing a bad connection on the wire. Also a leaky valve cover will piss oil onto the injector area and might be causing a bad connection.

Driving it like that wont be the end of the world. Go see a different mechanic and get your valve cover gasket and tube seals changed first, its a 75$ job, or 20$ and 45min DIY.

sometimes you do not even need to repalce the injector and while removing one of them (requires removal of fuel rail) it might be wise to remove them all and send to a professional lab for sonic+chemical cleaning and flow testing. that's what I did when I had trouble with injector on cylinder #3.
my own injectors after cleaning and balancing where probably better than new ones! they all were within 0.9% of flow difference to each other.

I made a DIY (check Camry FAQ sticky section) on removing the fuel rail and injector removal on 5s-fe, it also covers the steps necessary to replace the valve cover gasket and tube nut seals. If you have the spare time, some tools (they are not too expensive) and a palce to work on car (I did it in a parking lot) then you can save that $800 you would spend for mechanic's bills and drop the price down to less than $200 with everything (4 injectors cleaning&balancing is around $25/each +s/h both ways).

as above, the valve cover gasket and tube nut seals are very cheap, Fel-Pro used to make a good kit, all together at like $20 or you can get all of those from dealer online (or locally at slightly higher price) for about $40.

Thanks...I went to my usual and they did it for 200 bucks. I asked about the gasket but they said there was only an O ring. I'm still Poed that the other guys managed to extract 90 bucks from me but it was a sunday so I it was either them or the dealer to diagnose AFAIK.

The factory injectors (Manf. by Denso) run about $170 per injector at your toyota dealer. You can get aftermarket ones from autozone for about $80 bucks. My toyota dealer charged me $ 450ish to replace one injector reason being is because I have the 1MZFE and the malfunctioning injector was on cylinder 1 which requires removing the intake manifold in order to get to thus a lot of labor.
