92 Camry timing belt broke... Help

I have a 92 camry 2.2 4 cylinder. On my way home from work, the check engine light came on, then a few seconds later, the car shut off while driving. after coming to a stop, i tried cranking the car over and nothing. sounded differently than normal. no start though. i thought i was out of gas because it was running low and my low fuel light just kicked on. added fuel and still no start. now im assuming its my timing belt after reading some forums. could i have destroyed my engine because i tried starting it after the belt broke? is there any way to check the valves and make sure they are not bent. from what ive heard, if you try to start a car with a broke timing belt, it will screw up the motor. any help will be great. ive read/found the posts on replacing the belt but i just want to make sure its not a lost cause if my motor is shot. thanks in advance!! oh and my car just rolled over 300k

No, it's a non-interference engine.

Compression test.

Remove the distributor cap and as you're cranking the engine then look to see if the rotor turns - if not it's you TB

It's a non-interference engine so the valves won't hit the pistons. Do a complete timing job with OEM parts or aftermarket like:

GATES K030295 Micro-V AT Power Steering Belt $5.14
GATES K050435 Micro-V AT Alt/AC Belt $14.10
FEL-PRO TCS45920 Crankshaft Front Seal Set $5.10
FEL-PRO TCS45641 Camshaft Front Seal $3.66
NATIONAL 221820 Polyacrylate Oil Pump Shaft Seal $2.86
GATES TCK199 (1 Belt, 1 Tensioner, 1 Idler) Timing Belt Component Kit
$52.89
STANT 48278 180° w/Jiggle Pin OE Type Thermostat $10.94
AISIN (OEM) WPT010A Water pump w/o housing $30.79
FEL-PRO VS50304R1 Valve Cover Gasket Set w/Spark plug tube seals
$18.26
Subtotal $143.74
Shipping about $20

You might want to add NGK Iridium-IX spark plugs and new radiator hoses (I prefer Gates) for example.

Mine broke a few weeks ago and I can assure you that it's a non-interference engine. I bought OEM timing kit for $110 with Mitsuboshi belt and AISIN water pump. Gates are great though...did last 120k miles. I overran that one big time, not Gates fault.

You can be sure whether it's the timing belt issue or not by removing intake hose and distributor cap. Have your buddy crank the engine, then observe whether to rotor (which connects to the camshaft) spins. If it doesn't, then you know your cam isn't spinning = timing belt.

....and at this point, if you have interference engine and the belt broke while engine is running, it's a lost cause already.

will I also need the gaskets for the timing belt cover?
