3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 1997 Toyota Camry 4 cyl, automatic with 89k miles on it. About a month ago, I took my Camry in to be fixed and had an entire timing belt replacement with water pump, seals and pulleys. I also had the mechanic fix a bad oil leak that I had. He replaced the oil pump gasket and did an oil change. After the repair, I started parking my car in the garage and noticed what I thought was a clear liquid on the garage floor (floor painted red) near the front of the engine, passenger side. I assumed it was coolant fluid, b/c the mechanic added coolant during the repair and I know I have a crack in the coolant overflow bottle. I just assumed it would leak a bit until the fluid level went below the crack.
For the last week, I've been parking my car outside and now it doesn't seem like it's leaking on the passenger side in the front anymore, but now I'm noticing a small amount of liquid on my driveway on the driver's side near the middle of the engine. I went into the garage and cleaned up the fluid and noticed that it's mostly clear, but also a light brown color, there was also some dirt mixed in. It seems like it's oil, but it doesn't look like the oil leak that was happening before my repair. The driveway fluid looks light brown also, but no dirt. BTW, I'm parking on the same side of the driveway and the garage. Any ideas on what to have checked next? Can a leak move?
Would he have touched the valve cover gasket if the leak was connected to the oil pump? I don't know that I'm going to be able to look in the area you're suggesting. I'm not sure where the intake manifold is. I know he's a good mechanic and I know there was an issue connected with the replacement gasket. Eventually he ended up ordering the part from the dealership b/c I guess other parts didn't work or fit.
if you don't feel like checking it for yourself and you trust your mechanic more or less, just take the car back to him and let him take a look from under the car using the lift. he should know right away where it is coming from and if that is related to gasket he installed, he *should* get it corrected for free (if no extraordinary things happened).

Thanks for the comments. I will take it back to him, b/c I don't have any equipment to look underneath the car. I'm just very surprised this is oil. I know this isn't like the original leak, b/c it's happening on the opposite side of the engine. Maybe the original leak was masking another smaller leak somewhere else, if that makes any sense at all.
