Steering Wheel

Will a Gen 5 steering wheel work on a Gen 4.5? My trim is CE so there aren't any sort of buttons on the wheel. The wheel itself is in pretty bad shape, the foam is flaking and I'd like to replace it hopefully with a nice soft leather wheel I'm not sure how airbag connectors will work but I figure a wheel from an '02 shouldn't be too hard to get into an '01...

I don't know, but LynchbergCSI might be able to help you out with this. I know he does steering wheel retrofits. PM him.

Oh and about the junkyards on the other thread: I don't know of any good pick and pulls in the metro (i've actually been looking for some myself). There is an awesome one here in Augusta though. I know that prolly doesn't help though.

If I could do it with my gen3.5, I don't see why you couldn't do it with a gen4.5.

Man, I love your gauges! Where are they from, where'd you get them?

Nice! Could you give some info on what is needed to do this? I found some Gen 5 steering wheels on eBay for about $50 w/o airbags and $150 with. I'm guessing I'd just need to buy the wheel and airbag. Solara and Celica wheels also look similar to Gen 5's, would one of those work? There might be one cheaper so I'd like to keep it as an option...

There have been a few TN member who wanted the same set, and while they did find companies who had them, they never found the company where I got mine from for far less than the others. I guess I've held on to that secret long enough. So, here you go...

1) the Wheel and airbag of course

2) a set of matching airbag connectors. I got mine from ebay. You'll only need the orange one, but they come as a set.

3) the air bag connector from a gen3/4. You can either cut this off of your current airbag, or find a gen3/4 in the junkyard with an intact(non-deployed) airbag, and it off of that one.

You'll use items 2, and 3 to make an adapter for the new airbag.

4) the cruise control lever from your current wheel. Here's a pick of my gen3.5 CC lever (bottom) next to the gen5 CC lever(top). As you can see, they have the same mounting points.

Here's a pic of the my gen3.5 CC lever installed in the gen5 wheel.

The black wire from the CC lever will either need a connector to attach to the metal tab of the wheel(grounding point), or you you can solder it to that tab. I used a connector.

That's it...simple as that.

Man I just bought some el-cheapo indiglo gauges, I wish I'd seen this site 3 weeks ago!

Thanks for the info on the steering wheel, that'll help a ton of people out.

Although... I don't have cruise control. I don't think any Gen 4.5 CE's came with it. I'm assuming that I can just leave out the cruise control switch and the wheel will still be good?

Thanks again, I'm going to have to go searching for some Gen 5 wheels soon!
