4th Generation Stock Radio Volume on 2000 LE no workie

The Car: Gen4 (2000) Camry LE w/ stock radio

The Problem: The volume of the stereo does not work; turning the volume knob has no effect. All other buttons seem to work fine, but I am getting no sound at all out of it.

Is there a fuse or a relay I need to inspect, or does the stereo need replacing?

likely the head unit went bad. I had similar trouble with the Tune in knob on factory stereo unit in my car. behind the knobs are variable resistors usually, that's what goes bad with age on those units. not to mention frequently non-working CD players in old Toyota head units.

Instead of fixing or replacing with same old stuff from junk yard, I'd rather consider getting a modern stereo head unit from best buy or crutchfield's. well worth it.
