3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
hey guys. 2nd week with the "new" '99 camry and another problem emerges. this time, the left back window stopped working. the motor still works, it's clearly audible when you activate the switch. it just doesn't seem to be attached to the windowpane. the window is loose and can be pulled up or pushed down easily, and when you press the switch when the window's all the way down, you can hear it click-click-clicking like it's trying to engage a latch or something.
do you think you know what's going on? i checked the FAQ and all the repairs pertained to the motor, so i'm coming to you.
i'm guessing this is a relatively simple matter of opening up the panel, fixing/replacing some part, and closing her up again. i just don't know whether, being a complete noob, i should attempt this myself.
Most likely the "regulator" has broken. They're not terribly difficult to replace; gotta take the inside door panel off. You can buy them with or without the motor. Sounds like your motor is working? Here's some on eBay; $30 to $50 or so...
Had the same problem with my 99 on the rear driver's window. My window would fall down a few inches. The motor was fine but the regulator broke at the point where the braces basically make an X. The star bolt (Bascially a rivet) broke. I just ordered a replacement from Rock Auto and replaced the whole regulator/motor. I think it was a Dorman. Took about 20-30 minutes to replace. I ended up buying the plastic door inserts to keep the panel attached to the door at NAPA.
thanks guys for the response. i finally got around to getting an estimate from a mechanic (i'm in LA and not being able to roll up the window is not a big deal) and he just quoted me around $440+tax for parts and services. he said toyota sells the mechanism as an assembly and the part costs 290 bucks. i'm thinking... bullshit?
i'll let him know thanks but no thanks, and try to take care of this myself, with the parts that BMR linked to.
I checked prices on one of the online genuine Toyota parts websites (Toyotapartscheap.com). The regulator's MSRP is $119, and the motor's is $330. So if he was quoting to replace both, it's a reasonable deal. If just the regulator, he's a ripoff artist.

When I replaced my factory one with the Dorman one I saw the factory one might have been a bit beefier but I wasn't about to pay $150 or more for the regulator alone. I figured my back window doesn't get used near as much as the front windows. Anyway, the Dorman works great and hopefully, it will last a while. I just replaced the whole unit, not just the regulator. Really, it is a pretty easy job to do once you have the door panel off. Just like 5 or 6 bolts to undue and unplug the motor.
