How do I remove the shift cable?

Hi,

My shift cable broke and I'm trying to replace it. I don't seem to understand how to remove it from the frame under the console. Here is a picture of what I'm working with.

The gold colored piece is a clip, pull it out and the cable will be free to come out. Its not a fun job...

Thanks, that worked. Another qestion. How to I get the cable out through the firewall? Do I need to remove the screws and plate in this picture? If so, is it just a matter of removing the screws or do I need to get under the car? I don't have a jack.

Shift Lever

Hi, I have another question. And thank you so much for your help. Seems like the shift control cable broke because the shift lever is tight / needs some lubrication. Do I need to take the shift lever off to lubricate it or can I just hit it with some WD-40 and all purpose grease?

The outside one will remove with two 10mm bolts, and theres a rubber grommet / metal plate that will come off.

Once the metal plate is off, take an exacto knife and put it inside the firewall and cut out the rubber thats held in place (you can remove the rear plate as well, but its really difficult to get to.)

Once you cut out all that rubber inside, the cable will pull right out of the car.

Uhoh, if that lever is frozen you've got bigger problems. That goes to the valve body inside the transmission and if it is damaged you will need to repair or replace that transmission

Whats the story on this car? Did you buy it broken?

shit lever maintenance

Thanks for the reply. The shift lever isn't seized. Just wondering if the shift cable broke because the shift lever needs to be lubricated or just because it's old? I can move the shift lever by hand.
