3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Wow! I purchased a 1992 Camry a couple months back and just getting around to clean it up and prepare to sell it or keep it for a winter ride. Low miles 107K. Interior/exterior dirty but able to clean up. I pulled the rear tires off to adjust the weak parking brake and to my surprise I find disc brakes on the rear. This is a 4 cylinder, automatic. Can some expert enlighten me if this is rare? It's a LE Model. Did they come with 4 wheel Disc or was this some special order for a LE? The car is pretty basic otherwise. No leather seats, etc.
It is Japanese built. VIN JTXXXXX
Build date 06/92
C/TR 8G2/FC87
A/TM 02A/A140E
Model SXV10L-AEPNKA
Thanks for anyone's input. Just curious if the Japanese built came with 4 wheel disc. Doesn't appear to be ABS as I don't see any pump or other device under the hood. BTW I own 2 other '92 Camrys both with VINs of 4TXXX and they are the front disc/rear drum setup. Just wondering if this may be an enhanced selling point if I decide to sell.
Thanks,
Greg

Reason: typo
IIRC, in '92, springing for either ABS or the V6 engine got you disk brakes in the rear. Not sure if being a J-VIN makes a diff in that regard; don't think so. So like 92Camry5sp said, look under the windshield washer fluid reservoir for an ABS pump. Or see if an "ABS" light in the cluster lights up and then goes out when the key is turned to the ON position.

Thanks guys! I did pull the washer reservoir and sure enough, I see the ABS unit. I was just curious how this got equipped on a LE model. I did own a 93 Camry V6 with the XLE package and it did have 4 wheel ABS Disc.
Pretty sure in '92 & '93 ABS was optional on all trim levels, from the base DX to the top of the line XLE. It was pretty commonly found on the XLEs, as dealers tended to order them in that way. WAAAaaay less common on the DXs. Even LEs usually didn't have it. It was a $1,100 option, so it tended not to get ordered much. Here's the window sticker from my LE:

ABS was still an $1100 option when i ordered my 94 XLE 4 cylinder with ABS. It also came as a model manufactured in Japan, but I don't think the source of manufacture had anything to do with the 4 wheel disc setup. Personally I think the technology didn't exist back then to do ABS with rear drums; that's why the ABS option was so expensive on the 4 cylinder models.
I've never seen a Toyota with drum brakes and ABS.
Here in Canada, rear discs seem to be fairly rare on the 4 cylinder model, going by what I see at the salvage yards. Off topic, but I did see ABS on a 1990 Camry V6 model, first time I had seen that. Had a power drivers seat as well. Nice car, 25th Anniversary edition (time Toyota had been in Canada at the time).
