Hey everyone, I was wondering how hard it would be to remove the head from my 5sfe to do a little cleaning and maybe paint it. Is this something that would be pretty hard to do, or would someone with limited mechanical knowledge be okay to attempt it?
I am guessing I'd have to wait till I'm doing an oil change so its drained right?
Unhook the few vacuum lines, and plugs, pull spark wires, and then look at the four bolt head around the holes you just pulled the spark bolts from. Find a wrench, socket, or something else to pull the boots off. Then pull head off and your done. They are wide and low and rather large..... It's really simple to take off, every thing is on top and easily visible. Just make sure to drop nothing, and keep that area clean. Don't want anything gumming up your cams.

the spark plug tube nuts are 30mm, so borrow a 30mm axle nut socket (1/2'' dr) from autozone for easy removal and re-installation to specs (17ft-lbs).
it might be a good time to replace the valve cover gasket and 4 tube nut seals at same time.
Fel-Pro makes good gasket kits for that.

There are two vacuum lines on the right side that I could see and on the left side side there is just the big clip line thing that sits between your head and timing cover. Move this to the side, the spark boots, and take those bolts off and it should come off after that. You might have to remove the top adjustment bolt in your alternator, but that's all I can think of.
