3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My 93 Camry V6 keeps dying on the hwy. While driving along, all power is lost and the car shuts off. Coast to the side of the road, put it in park, wait a min or two and the thing starts back up and off you go again. Doesn't happen at any certain time (under load, down hill, etc.) just randomly. Also, sometimes hard starting, cranks like a champ, but sometimes just won't fire. Wait a min or two, and the thing cranks right up. I initially thought about the fuel pump, but it doesn't stutter or anything while driving before it dies. Seems to be getting plenty of fuel when it's running. What about the distributer? It being pretty humid in HI and raining quite a bit, could this be my issue? Any and all help is appreciated! I feel I'm on a wild goose chase!
I'd suggest doing a spark test when this occurs to narrow down where to look first. When it fails on the hwy do your other electrical accessories work?

I will be taking the cap off tonight and check it out! Thanks all!
The coil isn't under the distributor cap. It's mounted on the driver's side strut tower, right behind the air filter box. Follow the ignition wire from the dizzy's center tap back to it; can't miss it. Kinda hard to inspect thoroughly for cracks, as it's buried a bit. It's potted on the top-side though, so you might find some there.
I just replaced mine, so it's fresh on my mind.
