Metallic rattling noise When Idling in Reverse or Drive (97 Camry 4cyl)
Okay So I bought my dads 1997 Camry LE 4 Cylinder automatic transmission, I noticed that when I drove the car for at least 15-20 minutes and I am Idling on reverse or drive I hear a metallic rattle or grinding sounding like its coming from underneath the car or engine bay.
When I shift into Park or Neutral the noise disappears.
All the things i did so far is change both the differential fluid and the tranny fluid.
Change the oil and filter
Had a backyard mechanic change brake pads (he only changed the brake pads and left the rotor un-resurfaced, it started making noise when braking 2 weeks later)
After doing some Searching on the internet I found out some possible options of the noise that occur on reverse or drive.
Heat Shield, exhaust shield around Catalytic Converter (dad had the pipe before cat re-welded on a year ago)
Motor Mounts (mines are a little worn)
Brake pads, Rotor?
at last but not least Transmission issue? ( i hope not)
i want to lift up the car while the car is on reverse or drive to see whats making that noise but that seems very unsafe, I am a Honda guy and i am somewhat mechanically inclined but i am stuck on how to figure out whats making this noise?
Please help fellow camry and toyota owners.
