Hello. I was looking to swap a manual transmission into my '97 5SFE Camry and wanted to ask a few questions before attempting this. If there is a tutorial covering this stuff, could you please point me in that direction? I used the search tool and there didn't seem to be anything answering my questions, so forgive me if this is possibly a re-post.
First off, what are some (if any) other transmissions that are compatible with my Camry? What I mean is, can the transmission from, say a 1MZFE Camry or a 5SFE Celica work in my car without drastic modifications? Also, from the ones that do work with my 5SFE, which one in particular would you recommend?
Secondly, I was considering going to the junkyard and picking up a manual trans. from a Gen.4 Camry 5SFE. Since you never know how that transmission was treated during its life, I was going to rebuild it with brand-new components. I was curious what I CAN replace in it? As in, what pieces to this trans. are available aftermarket?
Lastly, aside from the internal transmission components, what other parts/work would need to be done? I know I'll have to take out the Automatic gear selector to put in the stick-shift, but is there anything else (instrument cluster, etc.)? I ask abotu the instrument cluster because it has the Park-Drive-Reverse-etc. light bar for automatic transmissions. How do you go about installing things such as the stick-shift and clutch pedal?
Again, if this has been covered before, I am sorry, but could you point me in its direction? Or if there is a YouTube video, etc. that shows installation?
Thank you very much to anyone who can help! I've asked a lot of questions in one post and I greatly appreciate help from anyone who can bear with a noob to the car modification world
