3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I am new to Toyotas and recently inherited a 94 Camry. When the door opens a chime starts and does not go off until the door is shut. Looking at a wiring diagram it appears that only the courtesy light operates off the door switch. The key is not in the igntion nor are the headlights on. Any suggestions on troubleshooting or repairing this. Thanks for any advice.
What aftermarket items are installed? Alarm? Stereo? Remote start? Fog/driving lights?
There are things you can do to find out what switch is activating the reminder chime. Unplugging the reminder wire from the ignition switch would be a start. If it stops...then most likely the reminder part of the switch is stuck on.

No after market items. I will start as you suggested. Do you the location of other reminder wires? Many thanks.
Just heard a door open chime on my 94 for the first time this week. My spouse used the car and didn't close the sunroof completely. Open/close/no more chime.
No sunroof. But this week experience shows that the problem is intermittent. I guess I will have to wait until it is consistent, if ever, and track it down. It is more of an annoyance right now.
Ok.. I turn off the dome light and I don't get the chimes when to door opens. When I switch the dome light back to door - the chimes begin but only when the driver side door opens. No chime action when the passenger door opens. Is it logical to replace the driver's side light switch at this point? Thanks.
Took the car to a garage that specializes in Toyotas. They replaced a very worn ignition switch which solved the chime problem. Labor and parts were $200.
