94 Camry XLE Hard Brake Pedal

Hello,

I have a 94 Camry XLE that feels like the booster is out, however, the ABS is not working, and no ABS light on, and it worked before. I believe the cruise went out at the same time. When hitting the brakes hard it seems like only the fronts are working and the car pitches to one side and then the tires lock and skid for days. Couple of questions.

Where does the booster get its vacuum on these cars?
Does the cruise work off the same vacuum source?
Can an inop proportioning valve cause this type of problem?
If the rear chamber of the master cylinder is inop will that cause the ABS to not work?

Thanks for checking in, All replies greatly appreciated

Booster should git it's vacuum from the air plenum. You can easily trace it from the booster.

Have you checked the brake calipers fer operation? You'll need to pull the tires off and see if the guide pins are sticking and not allowing the brakes to compress properly.

Why isn't yer ABS working? Did the relay/fuses blow? Does the ABS light come on when you first start the vehicle? This is an operation check. Are you sure the bulb is working?

When was the system bled last? Was it bled properly?

Havent actually dove into it yet, plan on doing that tomorrow. Just wanted to get a feel for where everything was at and how they might be tied together. Havent checked the calipers or fuses, and the ABS light does not come on at all, dont really ever remember seeing it but pretty sure remember hearing brakes growl as they are supposed to before all this happened. Have no idea when the last time the brakes were bled. Checked the fluid and it looked very low, have a sneekin feeling I am going to get to redo the rear brakes or have a leak in the rear at least. I think the booster is actually working, pedal just feels hard because the rear is inop, will lift and see what calipers and or drums lock up and which do not, still a little confused as to why the ABS isnt working even if only the front brakes are functional, should that be the case?

Thanks for the reply, appreciate it!

Cruise will go out if you have any type of brake issues. Not really sure about anything else though. The only thing I can really think of telling you is check for leaks and check for dampness in the drivers side foot well. If I remember right having dampness there indicates a bad master cylinder.... I would wait for more experineced people to chime before taking my word though. Except for the cruise issue, I know that's out because of your brake light (or ABS, any brake related issue) will disable cruise.

Do a booster check by using up all the vacuum (repeatedly stepping on the pedal) with the engine off. The pedal should rise higher as the vacuum in the booster (if any) is used up.

And hold the pedal down and start the engine. Does the pedal sink? If so the booster should be fine.

Master cylinder was bone dry, tends to be a problem. Who'd a thought hydraulic brakes need fluid. Front right hose going to the caliper was cracked. Replaced hose, bled, and good as new.
