DIY: Passenger cv shaft (pics)

LEVEL: between easy and medium
hour: 1hr

tools needed: 14mm, 17mm socket and 30mm deep socket, 25" breaker bar, 2-foot-pipe ( I got at homedepot)
plier, pb blaster, anti-seize compound, locking plier, punch, hammer
optional tool: tie rod arm puller, 21mm socket for puller, slide hammer, axle puller(pn: 27058)

(30mm deep socket, 25" breaker bar, slide hammer and axle puller can be loaned at autozone for free)

remove the tire and put a jack stand .
remove the cotter pin and the star socket with a plier and insert a punch into the rotor
It will keep the rotor from turning when you remove the 30mm socket.

spray the pb blaster around the 30mm bolt, wait and remove it with the breaker bar and the cheater bar.
(It wil be really hard without these three tools; pb blaster, 25" breaker bar and cheater pipe. The pic shows the screwdriver
but, I actually inserted a punch)
2

remove the cotter pin of the tie rod bolt and remove with the puller.
(this step is optional but easier to remove and install the cv shaft)

spray the pb around the three ball joint bolt remove them with the 17mm socket

insert the breaker bar between them and separate them

hit the shaft with the hammer and remove outside of axle from the rotor

remove the 14mm bolt under the cv shaft and remove also the clamp ring with the plier
(You can NOT remove the cv shaft without removing the ring)

You can use either the slimer hammer with the puller or cheater . I actually didn't have to use the slider hammer set.
( I have removed the passenger axle 4 times of different camrys, but never used the slide hammer because I live in souhtern CA.
If you live in cold weather place, You may need to use the slide hammer).
place the cheater bar against the blue point of cv joint and hit that with a hammer

this is the pic how I did. It was hard to take a photo with a cellphone camera under the car please understand it

transfer the clamp ring to a new cv shaft and don't forget the anti-seize compound

insert the cv shaft into the transmission. You may have to use a wrench and hit that like the pic. (actually I didn't have to)

install the clamp ring and installation is in reverse

nice work!

pics are a bit dark, but a little photoshop could fix the brightness.
