3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 94 Camry that overdrive has stopped working. About a month ago the check engine light came on, had it checked it was code PO135 o2 heater circuit. I picked up a new sensor and realized there are three of them. (how do you tell which one is bad). A couple day later I noticed overdrive stopped working . The OD light will come on but nothing happens. The same thing with the other power button on the console.
The car runs fine, trans shifts good, the fluid looks good and getting about 20 mpg, was 24 or 25.
Is there any thing else I can check?
OD will not engage if the computer thinks the coolant is below a certain temperature. So you either have a bad sending unit, or perhaps a bad thermostat.

P0135 is bank 1 sensor 1. That's the one in the rear bank's exhaust manifold downpipe; next to the firewall. Most likely it's why your gas mileage is down. The ECU uses default fueling curves, which are rich to avoid engine damage. Don't let it go too long, because it can damage the catalytic converter.

Thanks for the help.
Where would the sending unit be, I am going to try this one first. The temp gauge has not changed.
Well I installed a new o2 sensor and TSU. That got rid of the check engine light, but I still have no overdrive.
I have not changed the thermostat yet as it hase never changed since I have had this problem.
I hate to keep throwing parts at it, but what else could it be? ECM maby?
TSU - Temperature Sending Unit? Do you mean the engine temp gauge sender or the ECT (Engine Coolant Temperture) sensor?
It is the sensor on the left side of the engine close to the metal fill neck for the cooliant.
I noticed there is a sensor on the right side of the engine that is slightley larger than the one on the left. This one also has something to do with the temp?
Water outlet on passenger side of engine, probably two wires. Haynes manual ($21) will enable you to help yourself. I don't have test specs. but you'll have to measure OHMs at cold and hot.
