Blackstone UOA '02 1mz-fe Mobil1 10w30 HM

just sharing some UOA with TBN I did on sample from oil.

Oil used Mobil1 Full synthetic 10w-30 High Mileage
filter used: OEM
time on oil: 7 months
miles: 3.7k (lots of short distance city driving except for last 1.5k miles)

it looks not bad, the image also contains former Royal Purple 5w-30 results in last column (6 months and 1.5k miles only) where TBN was surprisingly low.

I have a little higher lead and copper particles count in this sample than last time.
Also the Calcium and Boron count jumped very high, but it seems to be coming from Mobil1 HM formula as both are detergents vs former RP oil results (where Magnesium was very high instead).

Wondering how the next UOA comes out with M1 0W-40, I may even stop changing oil by time and start doing it purely by miles. In last results, the Blackstone recommends now going 4.5k miles OCI ignoring the time.

also here is a copy of explanation page I scanned some time ago:

no probs

I like looking at those numbers, makes me feel better I guess that's why I do UOA hehe

soon, will have UOA results from 5s-fe, will post it too

Seems I will switch to changing oil once a year soon, just need to decide which weight I want to run all year long, probably one out of three (all Mobil1): 0w-30, 0w-40 or 5w-30 HM, just need to sample all of them first to know for sure.

My best candidate is the 0W-40 so far (if no leaks occur) based on specs, but UOA is unknown, have anybody gotten it tested by any chance? ... only problem is with finding a good cheap source of this oil ... if only walmarts carried it ...

just curious cuz i don't have much knowledge in elements. your calcium and boron count jumped very high, is that a good thing? i always change my oil by OCI. i think good/quality oil can withstand time. here our wal-mart sells the 0w-40. $6/ qts.

yeah, it's OK. the explanation page from Blackstone says both Calcium and Boron are detergents so they must be coming from the HM formula cleaning/conditioning package.

man you are lucky. I have 3 Walmarts nearby in like 10 mile radius and none of them has 0W-40 oil, I haven't even found an empty space with sticker stating that they even carry it ... I will keep looking though.

Last time I bought 0W-30 ($6.76/qt) I took the last 4 bottles.

UOA looks good, I need to order a kit. I want to go 7500 miles between oil changes since I drive much more now. More than 4k miles in 3 months.

thanks

order a kit today, it takes good 2-3 weeks before arriving in the mail.

get your current oil tested at 5k miles before extending to 7.5k, make sure there is no issues. other than that you are doing highway miles mostly, so I would expect with that amount of heavy duty and "healthy" driving even 10k miles should be OK. get it tested though before extending by 2.5k miles each time to be sure

get the TBN rating too. if you ever notice it around 1-2 then it means it's not good no matter what elements are found in the sample and OCI needs to be shorter.

Just ordered. I do about 50/50 driving more or less, depends on what I have to do. I'm wondering how good the filter would be at 10k, using Toyota filter. Also how do you pay when you return the kit?

50/50 is tricky, depends on many things, I'm sure UOA will help you decide.

yeah, I am wondering about filters too.
so far I've been testing 1mz-fe always with OEM filters (have a bunch left of regular size), next time it will be with Bosch Distance Plus filter (and 0w-40 oil).
on 5s-fe I use either OEM or Denso or Pureone, now have left OEM (regular size) only filter. need to use them up.

I would say, with extended drain (>5k miles) either swap the filter of regular size half way through and top off (~0.2qts) oil or get longer filters from 2.4L or 3.3L respectively (compensate by filling more oil, I think extra 0.2qts does the trick).

well, long story short, I'm stuck with regular size OEM filters for both cars, so I may start using 2 filters per extended OCI for now, but eventually I think I will buy a few larger PureOne filters off amazon (or get them with oil promo in parts store like Advance Auto together with oil), this brand seems to filter the best.

I pay by check kinda old school I know
I have a few old check books that I do not use for anything LOL as I pay electronically for almost everything, so I fill out a paper check and roll it together with oil sample and information slip

just for the record, I posted it in many places already, but here it is a handy list of Toyota equivalent filters

Oil filters:
a) 5s-fe 2.2L
PureOne standard PL14476 / larger PL14477
WIX standard 51394 / larger 51396
OEM standard 90915-YZZF2 / larger 90915-YZZF1
Mobil1 EP standard M1-103
Bosch Distance Plus standard D3311 / larger D3325

b) 1mz-fe 3.0L
PureOne standard PL10241 / larger PL20195
WIX standard 51348 / larger 51516
OEM standard 90915-YZZD1 / larger 90915-YZZD3 / 90915-20004 (JDM, better filtering media and valve)
Mobil1 EP standard M1-102
Bosch Distance Plus standard D3330 / larger ?

I'm using the YZZD3 filter, a little larger than stock, the medium size. I'll figure out what to do when I get the UOA. I hope I can make it until late March/early April on the next OCI, hate working on cars in cold weather.

I think I'll do Mobil 1 EP Oil and Filter, then go back to the HM next season.

Can you pay by Credit/Debit Card?

yeah, tell me about working on cars in Winter ... in a parking lot! been there, done that, not fun.

hey, uhm, I don't think Mobil1 EP oils actually are any good, check the specs:
http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub...rformance.aspx

they actually look worse than regular full synthetics (non EP) ... dunno what up with that ...
http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub...il1_5W-30.aspx

even thin 0W-30 is better looking in specs than 5w-30 EP class ...
http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub...l_Economy.aspx

I would stick either to HM versions or go with 0W-40 (seems best). 0W-30 is very similar to classic 5w-30, but is better in my case for Winter conditions (lots of cold starts).

yeah, you can pay by card, just fill out the numbers on the slip, I don't have patience for hand writing that.

Hmmm if I can find 0W-40 I'll get it, then go back to 5W-30 HM in the Spring.

My local Walmarts stopped stocking it as well. I guess not much demand from normal Walmartians. Amazon your best bet with a little better price than parts stores and if you purchase enough then free shipping. M1 has really gone up in price.

right, I forgot about amazon shipping oils. they seem to carry 6-pack of 0w-40 with free shipping, but price is not much lower than in local stores (amazon:$8.25/qt. vs AAP:$8.79+tax/qt).

will see, will keep checking on walmarts, maybe some of them still have it, just like sometimes they carry Royal Purple 5w-30 while normally they do not stock it.
