front Monroe QuickStrut piston nut size?

as in topic.

does anybody know the size of piston rod nut (sitting in center of strut mount) for the front Monroe QuickStruts?

asking because I have all my tools at home and want to bring to car only what's needed. only want to tighten it to specs on wife's car, I suspect it might be loose on passenger side of wife's car (some noises sometimes).

heh, that's OK, I guess I'm a bit lazy myself too, but I don't want to bring the whole sets, only torque wrench and a few sockets

thing is that last time I tried a socket over that nut and I couldn't fit any metric one ... so I'm not even sure I have the right size among my metric deep wall impact socket set.

It might be a 7/8" if you have SAE sizes. *If* it's 7/8" then 22mm probably wont fit (slightly too small).

dang, I hope it's not SAE, as I don't have SAE deep walls of that size.

have only those (1/2''dr) metric deep walls:
10mm, 11mm, 12mm, 13mm, 14mm, 16mm, 17mm, 19mm, 21mm, 22mm, and 24mm.
Amazon Amazon

need to dig up my digital caliper, time to measure it
may need to buy 1 sae deep wall socket from autozone ... and return later if possible

OEM size is 19mm F / 17mm R IIRC. Metric sockets should fit close to their SAE counterparts. I would just bring 17-24mm, better safe then sorry.

hehe, my friend tried returning a socket back to Autozone, at first they said no, but if you bug them enough they'll take it back.

autozone better take it back. i bought a socket there, and they said all tools and sockets carries lifetime warranty.

yeah, I remember using my sockets on OEM nuts, 19mm fit just right. but those Monroes are different, IIRC neither 19mm nor 21mm fit, not sure about 22 but I think it was still too small and 24 was way too big (didn't even fit the hole where the nut is in).

will see.

yeah, I borrowed some wrenches from them, used and took it back. I try not to destroy the plastic wrap, just unclip it without damage if possible, then I put it back together and give back as "uneeded"

^ I just tightened the rear center nut on a friend's 2000 Camry that had Monroe Quick Struts. It was a 23MM. That's probably why the 22 was too small and the 24 too big.

Your local HFT may have both the 1/2"-drive 7/8" (~22.2mm) and 23mm for $0.99. Not sure if the sale is still on.

There are also coupons (with purchase) for a free digital multimeter or flashlight or screwdriver set, etc in many magazines.

OK, case solved. I'm officially retarded...

I went to HFT and grabbed the 7/8 deep wall (impact) socket for 1/2'' dr as I could not find the 23mm in any type. 7/8 barely fits, but I noticed what the problem was, there are 2-3 rubber tabs around the nuts. they initially make it feel like the socket won't fit. anyways 7/8 fit but barely (scratching the metal edge), very tight against the metal rim of the top of strut mount.

however, then I tried my old 22mm and it fit too , I just needed to wiggle it and press and twist all at same time and it went down and locked on the nut. it seems the nut is 22mm.

re-torqued all nuts on front of both cars and found 1 loose, FD corner of wife's car. the rest was tight, but I was able to minimally torque them a bit further until the wrench clicked.

anyways, I'm sure that 22mm non-impact deep wall socket would fit even better as its walls are thinner, so keep that in mind

Well as long as it works. Surprised Monroe's quality control.

Anyway did it solve the noise problem?

I don't know if it was solved it because I drive her car once a week LOL and haven't had time to check it yet. there is one certain uphill turning left bumpy road that makes the passenger side to clunk. will need to check.

Somehow I have a feeling it didn't solve anything though. I think the real culprit are the sway bar bushings in front, especially the one on the passenger side, sometimes (very rarely) I hear clunking, but not when going straight over bumps, only when swaying left AND going over bumps
FSB & RSB bushings were not replaced on this car.
