3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hi, I'm new to the whole car-game so what would you guys recommend as my first mod? looking to do some inexpensive work and fairly simple to someone who's not really a grease monkey. My camry just hit 150k btw.
if its a 4cyl:
Intake: $100 (ebay)
Headers: $240 (OBX)
Exhaust: $160 (Magnaflow)

$500= Good for 7 or 8 Horsepower (if that)
Personally, i'd leave the motor alone if its a 4 cyl. - these are great motors, long life, good mileage and very very reliable. BUT performance wise, unless yr about to do something drastic (in the $4,000-$5,000 range)- this platform is not the best candidate for the job!
no performance parts for the 3VZ-FE (pre 1MZ and before your model year) or the 1MZ-FE are cheap. so if you have a V6, then concentrate on going through the basic maintenance items such as belts, hoses, plugs, wires, fuel and air filters, vacuum lines, brakes, tires, etc before considering any mods. mods can put a strain on normal wear items and if you modify an engine that's not in perfect running condition, you are asking for a lot of trouble.
At 150K I think I'd leave the mods to the engine alone. Feed it good premium oil and drive it! Many people do intake and exhaust. Although it's debatable as to whether these mods actually produce any more power or just make the owner think it's faster because it's louder...
with 500usd, theres not much you can do with the engine.
like everyone said, you can definately do intake/full exhaust. however also like it was said, intake/exhaust is pretty pointless unless you will spend much more in the future and go crazy. you can either do forced induction or you can do all engine, rebuild all internals, NA tune, etc etc. if not, then adding intake/exhaust for 500usd will not produce much more power.
but its your money, your choice. if you feel you will like the loud sound, the feeling of having intake and exhaust, etc, etc, then by all means go for it.
so i guess my main point is, if you're not going to spend a LOT of money on this car in the future, spending the 500usd on intake/exhaust seems kind of a waste. because all the 2012 v6 cars will be much faster stock anyways lol
I don't care if it's the only mod you do. It makes the car growl. And being a 3.0 v6, it sounds pretty damn good. Plus, you might gain some MPG and HP. Don't get the ebay ones, do it right. Hearing the engine exploding as your hammering it through a tunnel or underpass or by the side of a Jersey wall is absolutely frighteningly cool. I have a supercharger on my car and can't hear it anymore But now I hear supercharger whine!
Seriously. You won't be disappointed. It's a great first mod to do.
Unfortunately, i got the 4 cylinder camry. looking into the intake/exhaust. Which are decent intakes? I don't wanna get the cheap ebay ones(unless they are reliable, which i doubt that they are).
