4th Generation 1998 Camry down to 2 cylinders??

Hey all, I've got a 98 Camry 5S-FE and she's not in good shape. It started out with rough idle and hesitation, then it happened. One day I was started out down the road and something seemed weird. Car was revving higher than normal and by the time I got to the interstate I realized that the check engine light was flashing at me. So I pulled over before I messed anything else up.

Well I got the codes and it turned out to be a P0302 and P0303, misfire on cylinders 2 and 3. So the first thing I thought was a bad ignition coil as one coil fires 2 and 3. So went down to the parts store and got a new one. Well I replaced it and no dice. So I got all new plugs, still no dice. The wires are only like a year old so I just don't think it's the wires. I also swapped the 1, 4 coil with the 2, 3 coil to see if it would fire but it doesn't.

When it fires up I can smell a strong gas smell so I know it's getting fuel and just not spark. Any ideas guys? I'm wondering if it's the ignition module, but don't know much about it or how to test it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Brad

Did you check those 2 plugs?

Very stong chance valve cover is letting in oil into those 2 tubes and causing the plugs to fire poorly.

Yes, I changed the plugs after the flashing CE. I do have a lot of leaking around the engine. Interesting thought about it being the valve cover. Would replacing the valve cover gasket fix that? Where is the oil getting in?

thanks

If the tube seals leak around the spark tubes oil can get in there and cause a misfire. It could be the wires still and tr igniter as well. You will have to check all ignition components to be sure. Could also be two leaky fuel injectors dumping fuel or an ecu problem. But those are unlikely.

If there was no oil on the wire or plug this is not your problem. The oil seeps in through the spark plug tube seals.

If your sure 2 and 3 arent firing at all pull the plugs and they should be wet with gas. Your probably only down 1 cylinder though and not both.
