USA transmission problems

hey guys, before anyone says anything about the search button, i've already read a couple posts and nothing sounds close to my problem. anyway, i'm working on my father in law's 2000 camry 2.2L automatic, 280k miles. it was acting up the other day and wouldn't go anywhere in D unless i hit the gas full throttle @ 4k rpm's. the car would then make a chattering noise and then pull. i got to walmart ok and at one point on the trip the trans pulled perfectly fine! i parked it, and checked the trans fluid and it was bone dry so i bought a gallon and put about half of it in. after i filled it up, i cycled through the gears and tried to drive off but it still was acting the same except reverse was working completely fine. i made it home but still had to rev up to 4k everytime i stopped in order for the car to pull. found out the last time any service was done was 100k ago (drain and fill) but he's never checked the levels since. there's a minor leak from the drive axle seal on the driver's side. my uncle suggested that the clutch pack in D was toast but i i don't know anything about auto trannys so any ideas would be good. thanks. also, i've got a 92 auto trans sitting in my garage. will it fit?

Your uncle probably right.

The 92 transmission will not work. you need a 4th gen transmission. (97-01)

Good luck

Here is a DIY on a swap but get a low miles Gen 4 unless OP wants to rebuild with $200 worth of parts plus a $150 rebuilt converter.

na...we're just gonna get a junkyard tranny and slap it in. best thing about it is the 30 day warranty. looking to get it on thursday. can't remember if they want a core. if not, i think i'm gonna tear it apart and rebuild it just for kicks...maybe
