3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Went to do the good car maintanance person "winter oil change" today, and learned that all Fram 3614 (92-93-other? Camry), oil filters have been recalled, and pulled from shelves. Apparently "O" ring failure can cause "massive oil loss and catastrophic engine failure". Made in China?... probably, just about everything is. Also, several other brands are either "out of stock" or also pulled from shelves. Quaker state filters are apparently sold out in most places, but OK. Dealer supplies of the right oil filter are not affected, but buy'em soon! -About $8.00 from your local dealer.

Wow, really? Not just Frams? I've been using Walmart's brand for years now. Glad I tend to keep half a dozen in stock. Both my Cam and Avy take the same 3614 size.

Fram oil filters don't have a good reputation with many. And as far as some are concerned they are all recalled.
Fram 3614 is the larger filter that's about the size of the V6 filters (FL910s, PL10241)? If so there are plenty of other filters that will fit. Catalogs show the Purolator PureOne PL14476 being the current application. In that case the taller PL14477 will work. And even the Motorcraft FL910s for the V6 too.
Ever since hearing about how Fram oil filters weren't good, I've gone back to OEM or Purlator Ones. I remember I even used a K&N once before when I was oblivious to cost.
Fram=junk. go with the oem oil filter over all else. if not oem, i prefer, wix, purolator pure one, or napa gold. fram filters have been known to crumble internally and have bypass problems.
Does anybody know 'how to tell' which one is affected by this recall?

Out of curiosity, where did you get them for that cheap? I am looking to stock up on the PH3614 because all my friends that I do their oil for uses that same filter along with one of my car (1MZ and the 5M). The PH3614 is always out at my local walmart and other places that do stock them are overpricing them.
check http://www.toyotapartsoutlet.com (click on red banner for OEM parts website). they have now free shipping in November and December.
Current price of oil filter (2.2L and 3.0L) over there is $4.05 for single unit. they used to have another part number for a case of 10 oil filters, this way the price was lowered to $3.99/each (when ordering a case).

No surprises here... I seem to recall (pun intended) PH4967 filters were recalled many years ago concerning us 4 cyl folks, because of badly cut threads on the base; and "pop off's" happening. this I believe was isolated to their Canadian production facility. I may still have a filter cartridge insert from a Canadian made Fram 3614 "Tough Guard", that has the paper endcaps crushed, filter element torn, all with the factory applied adhesive undisturbed, and exactly as it was made at the factory.
I used to cut open every used filter from my oil changes, and what I show below IS NOT from the opening procedure; you can clearly see the places where the paper endcaps were crushed, then the giant glob of factory sealant applied with a nice big hole ripped in the element. Nice pleat spacing too . Sent the POS to Fram, and they basically called me a liar, and to pound sand, sending it back to me.
I replied to them, asking them so exactly how did I apply the sealant after the filter was used, and perfectly match the exact same color, texture, and uninterrupted application... No reply was all I got. F the SOB's, and their shitty filters...
The relentless drive to do everything in the cheapest manner possible is now affecting even the highest levels of stakeholders, and shareholders of major corporations, and coming back to bite them in the checking account.
One can only dream that Fram might think, its "time to change our priorities a bit", and pay smart, dedicated and responsible people another $1.00 a unit, to make the company one that really delivers on quality and supply. Even Toyota, just got nailed with another recall on safety related parts.
I totally get the occupy Wall-Street thing, companies, banks, and trading organizations, priorities are all far to focused on this years numbers, and almost none of them are thinking about building their local piece of the macro-economy and future reputation. I might even have to buy a Hyundai next, because they are trying like all get-out to build a name right now, just like Toyota was 20 years ago.
I have to shut up now, cause my poodle is telling me not to sent e-mails after I've had a couple of wine coolers and start to get too juiced-up.

^ I hear you and totally agree with you Silent Runner
Hyundai and Kia sound like good choices nowadays new Toyotas demand frequent dealer visits unfortunately ... same goes for some luxury cars, the cost cutting disease mangled the reputation of pretty much all once awesome brands ... they are just decent nowadays ...
on a side note, I had one Fram ToughGuard filter I received with an oil change deal (Valvoline I thin it was) in local autozone like 2 years ago... I threw that filter to garbage bin as they refused to swap it for anything better and didn't want to take it back for any kind of refund LOL
a little out of topic maybe, but generally oil filter selection in autozone sucks big times, there is NOTHING good to choose from! They sell cheap Bosch Premium knock off, STP crap, FRAM shit and some ricers beloved K&N high flow filters (with horrible filtering abilities) ... come on ... they should carry at least one decent filter brand, but they honestly don't ...
