3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey all, I'm new here, and am making this post as a bit of a hail mary. I'm in the middle of an engine swap, I have engine from JDM Caldina, 4th Gen 3sgte into a 1997 Camry LE (5sfe). I was attempting to reuse Camry Auto tranny, and have read that the 3s should mate up because its an S series motor, like the stock 5s, however I'm running into issues. I know I'd need custom mounts and wiring but I thought engine mating to transmission would be the easy part. I've searched and searched the web and would like to keep the vehicle auto trans. If there is anyone out there who can assist me with this or explain to me why they don't seem to be mating I'd be greatly appreciative. I know its a bit of an unorthodox swap. Thanks in advance.
Actually had harness sent out, if auto trans isn't an option will prob sell whole setup, thinking of dropping in Celica shell. Fear that if I did go that route I might love it and have to sell 2jzge (no T) 85 Supra.
Not really concerned with inspection, I can get around that. See, that was my logic as well, if the swap works with stock manual Camry tranny then it should with auto as well. I have to further investigate this.
oh , mother of god >>>>> thats really a great news to this fourm finally after all the struggling with those who have the V6 engines ( 1mz-fe , 3vz-fe ) oh man i really think of the 5s-gte project but evrey time i think the 3s-gte holds my mind more and more good luck in youre project .
You better put a big tranny cooler in there somewhere, and contact importperformancetrans for a shift kit or kiss that factory Camry transmission goodbye
Props for a unique swap, but I am curious to see how you will solve the transmission wiring situation..

I did not realize I was actually getting replies to this thread, well my friend and I got the engine and trans bolted together but ran into a litany of other problems. A member messaged me asking a few questions and i noticed the replies. This would probably be a breeze for 5 spd but because my brother insisted on auto trans it became problematic to say the least. I will post my reply to that member inquiring minds will know whats involved in this swap, which admittedly still isn't 100% done yet, I'm at about 90%. Before I post reply I will say for the wiring I used mr220v over at the mr2 forums and though our best laid plans didn't go well, he was a great help as we both figured out a way to get the a140e to shift while attached to 4th gen 3sgte motor.
Hey there, firstly what generation 3sgte do you plan on using? The last generation 3sgte ECU will not run the stock Camry auto transmission (a140E). I'm not sure the 3sgte will bolt up to u241e but if it does the ECU WILL control shift functions of that transmission. That is the transmission from the 2002+ 4 cylinder Camry. The way the transmission operates for the stock auto trans from your car differs greatly from the way the 3sgte was designed to operate its auto trans. Now, CAN you bolt the A140e (your stock auto trans) to the 3sgte? Yes you can, can you use stock mounts? Well, yes and no, the front mount by exhaust manifold will work but has to be ground down a good deal to clear oil lines to turbo. The mount by alternator will work so long as you transfer bracket over from 5sfe. The rear mount by firewall is off by 1/4" and will pose a moderate problem. The problem is caused by the fact that rear mount also does not bolt to 3sgte block, the holes don't line up. I took measurements and welded bracket to block, I first made sure that axle spun smoothly through bracket when it was test fitted as that is very very important for obvious reasons. I would also transfer 5sfe oil pan onto 3sgte as the oil pans are different and cause the 3sgte to sit on cross member which would require modification to cross member. Once you have it all lined up in the bay you're good. The alternator from 5s will fit. Lastly I hope I have not discouraged you but here is a caveat if you're determined as I was, YOU can bolt the 3sgte to the a140e and have it work but it involves using two ECU's to run the vehicle, one ECU runs the engine, while the old 5s ECU will run the transmission. I used temp, and speed signal from trans, as well as SL solenoid and S1 S2 Solenoids and ran them to their pins on 5s ECU. I then tapped into power from 3sgte harness and ran it to accompanying pin on 5s ECU and lastly I tapped into TPS pins VTA THA and E2. This setup has worked well for me, one does however need to figure out what to do with kickdown cable is there is no accommodation made for it on 3sgte throttle bracket. If you're bold, determined and patient, this swap can be done but it is NOT an easy or simple engine swap at all. It will take a little time, money and energy to make this car run with this engine and stock auto trans. Hope I have answered all of your questions.
