waterpump yes, oil pump only if leaking. replacing the water pump is basically cheap insurance. since you are there, might as well spend the extra little bit to slap on a new one. on the camry, i think it is rare that the pump goes bad. they tend to only leak over time, so i would only replace it if it's leaking.

dont buy those parts off of ebay though. I bought a waterpump off of ebay, and within 200 miles it went bad.

I am assuming you meant a 2001 Camry 5SFE, not 2002 which changed to a timing chain on the 4 cylinder??

If your car does have a 5SFE then it has a timing belt. It shouldnt have a 5SFE if its a 2002 but other countries do different things.

If you do a timing belt you should ALWAYS do the water pump and replace all the seals. This includes the oil pump o-ring(a squarish gasket that seals the pump against the block) and the oil pump seal(the seal around the shaft of the pump).

If you do not replace these and they leak the leak is almost always a gushing oil leak not a seep like a valve cover or oil pan leak. Not just that but the parts are less than 20 bucks and easy to replace.

Also replace the Camshaft and Crankshaft front seals.

So in total you should replace.

Timing Belt
Tensioner Spring
Idler Pulley(unless in good shape)
Water Pump
Camshaft seal
Crankshaft front seal
Oil Pump O-ring
Oil Pump Seal
Thermostat(if doing the entire pump not just front section)

Yeah, I didn't even think about the car being shipped overseas, just thinking it was here in the US or Canada. Probably had different model conversion dates later in the year overseas. Learn something every day.

As far as replacing the water pump, you definitely should replace it since you are right in there. You don't want to do just the timing belt and have WP fail 10-15k miles later. I put in a replacement Aisin WP on both of my 99's. Also, I had an oil leak at the oil pump, basically, the little weird shaped O ring which goes around the oil pump case gets very brittle and just falls apart. A friend who is Toyota Tech said that is a common leak area on the 5SFE's. I used some lightweight grease to temporarily hold it in place as I was bolting it back up. Good luck!!

I have a 2003 Camry 4 cylinder and it has a timing chain. So I think the change from belt to chain may not have taken place until the 2003 model yr.

As for the water pump and oil pump, I always do the water pump with the timing belt, although I have heard of people letting it slide until the next timing belt change ie... another 90K mi. The oil pump I have never had to replace seals on. It was never mentioned by the dealer either as a recommended change. Otherwise I would replace the cam and crank seals and also the tensioner pulley, spring and idler pulley for sure. I understand the reasoning to do as much as you can while you are there with all the labor involved you really don't want to do it again if it can be avoided. So I guess it comes down to a matter of your budget and how long you intend to keep the car. Good luck!

You don't have to change the oil (not that I recall) because from memory, the oil pan is lower than the oil pump. I used Toyota OEM parts on those 2 oil pump seal/o-ring. You might check, but the parts numbers for 1997-2001 might be the same for the 5SFE's. The part numbers I used were:

15188-03011 GASKET, OIL PUMP BOD
[CAMRY | 1999 | USA] 1 4.90 4.90
15165-74020 SEAL, TYPE T OIL
[CAMRY | 1999 | USA] 1 6.37 6.37
90507-17003 SPRING, TENSION W/DA
[CAMRY | 1999 | USA] 1 2.60 2.60

The spring tensioner is for the Timing Belt. These are Toyota OEM part numbers. Hope this helps!
