please please...anyone know how to disconnect this gas connector

I am about to give up. I have been trying for the last 2 hours to remove this stupid connector. no luck at all...
any help would be greatly appreciated.
This is the connector that goes from gas tank to charcoal canister. Everything else is disconnected, tank is now hanging from the rear, supported by jack.

This should as simple as just squeeze at the top of the connector marked red and pull?
Somewhere I read this is vent hose, not an electrical connector. either way, i need to take this hose out

Apparently you need a special tool (per dealer). They suggest to use two small screw drivers wedge between the tabs and pry open, at the same time pull out. I couldn't get the second screw driver because of low clearance. In the end, I end up removing the canister along with the tank and then on the ground, used two screw drivers to pry open and it worked. Squeezing the connector made no impact, could be because it is almost 12 years old.
