A quite and dirty guide
Put the heater setting on high. Run the engine to operating temperature, shut the engine off. Loosen the radiator drain plug. Watch out for hot coolant and exhaust parts! Let the coolant drain until there is no pressure in the system, then remove the radiator cap. NEVER open the rad cap when the engine is hot and there is pressure in the system, you will be severely burned.
After the engine cools for a few minutes, remove the drain plug from the engine block. After the coolant is reduced to a drip, put the drain plugs back in and slowly fill the system with demineralized water. Start the engine for 10 seconds a few times as you are filling to minimize air bubbles.
makes the job much, much easier. If you don't have access to one, you can always rig something up yourself.
Run the engine to operating temperature, then repeat the drain procedure. Keep in mind that at this point, there will still be some water (and old coolant) in the system, so if the coolant was very dirty, you may have to do a drain/fill/drain with water again. Once you're satisfied with the cleanliness of what drains out, fill with your new coolant mix, compensating for the water left still in the engine. A hydrometer really helps here.
