Should I flush my transmission, or nay?

97 camry.

Oil has been changed regularly since birth

135k miles

Just curious if it would be ill-advised to drain and refill my trans fluid/put in a new filter.

There aren't THAT many miles on it.

I'd say do it. A drain/refill is the gentlest way of doing it. But you only get about 1/3 of the oil out that way. So you might wanna do that two or three times; maybe with each next oil change.

There's a more thorough way to do it that flushes out most all of it. Here's a DYI thread showing how it's done on the 4 cylinder. If you're up to it, I'd say do that instead.

I just flushed the ATF in my 96 Avalon. I used the DIY mentioned in the last post. It was actually really easy. My vote would be to do it that way. It's a much more complete fluid replacement.

I was actually just looking at that! thanks!

I just wanted to make sure that I'm not going to disrupt anything due to the fluid sitting in there for the past 13 years

I've been advised by Toyota that it is safe to flush the tranny. I've just had mine flushed with 128,000 miles. This is my second flush since 35,000 miles. All other times I've had a drain/refill. Either way is protecting your tranny.

It is save to do a flush on a transmission, just not a pressure or reverse flush with a machine.
