3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
This has been driving me crazy for a couple of months now, but I have a period gas leak. (3VZ-FE, auto) I have narrowed down the timing of this to some degree, and it mainly seems to occur on a full cold start. It will leak a small puddle of gas on the ground below the passenger side of the engine, right behind the passenger side tire. It will even trail drips of gasoline for a few ft. after you take off. I have thrown the hood open within a few seconds of starting the car cold, and smelling gas, but I can see no leaks coming from the area of the cold start injector, or visible fuel lines, or any gas puddling under the intake plenum. After maybe 2-3 minutes of running, the leak stops, but the smell takes awhile to go away. This can also not happen for as long as two weeks, but seems to be happening more frequently lately. I'm at a loss as to where to even look.
Are there any rubber fuel lines on the passenger side of the engine compartment? I can't find any in any of the technical referances I have access to, most of the fuel seems to come into (and recirculate back out to the tank) the engine compartment on the drivers side of the engine.
Any help or advise would be welcome!

Finally found it! The leak was actually out of the back cylinder bank on the old 3VZ, off of the DS of the Fuel injector rail. It was finally causing a CEL on a lean fuel condition. Then, I finally caught it flowing freely out from under the plastic cap on the DS end of the injector rail. popped the cap off and found the screw there very loose. Tightened it up. I don't know if this was this right solution, but it seems to have cured the leak and the CEL (code 26). So simple its a bit dumb sounding, but so far so good.

Ya, I'm pretty happy about finding it. I was down to about 15mpg in City driving, and constantly smelling a little bit of gas every time I parked the car. Turns out it would flow down the DS of the engine, puddle on the transaxle, then drip its way into something that would normally make added flow drip off the passenger side. I finally caught it flowing down to the transaxle, looked up and saw the leak and residual varnish/oily stuff in this location, a harder look, showed it flowing from the bottom of the cap on the rear FI rail. Now, why that frigging screw was finger loose? It's never been tampered with since the car was new. IDA know, hopefullly this fix will hold, the car smells alot better lately.
