poor gas mileage after engine swap

I have a 98 Camry which was originally equipped with the 2.2L. I had to replace the engine with a j-spec 2.0L , the head was different and the injectors from the 2.2l would not fit the new engine. I put the injectors that came with the new motor back in and everything plugged up and worked. The car runs and drives fine except for the 10 mpg its getting. Its running so rich you cannot open the sunroof or roll down the windows due to the smell of raw gas coming from the exhaust. Any advice or help will be greatly appreciated !!!

I'm not big with fuel injectors but are you using the original 2.2L ECM or the JDM 2.0L ECM? Mismatch computers may set incorrect duty cycle to the injectors and can cause a lean/rich condition.

I'm still running the computer for the 2.2l , I have ran into problems with Honda's that needed resistor packs hooked inline with the injectors to work properly when using J-spec equipment but I haven't read anywhere about having to do that with Toyota's.

running a mismatched type ECU on engine can cause all sorts of weird things to happen. I'm surprised you don't get a CEL with tons of trouble codes ... or do you?

I had a couple of codes up till now...This evening I cleaned the sensors on the throttle body and the throttle body itself. there was extreme buildup on everything i could see. after all that i cleared the codes and none have returned !!! I'm hoping that helps my problem. We have a long drive ahead of us on Thanksgiving day, around 200 miles,so we'll see tomorrow night how it helped.

Talking

Well the throttle body/sensor and intake manifold cleaning i believe did the trick. We filled up Thanksgiving morning and after nearly 200 miles of travel the car used just an 1/8 of a tank !!(before 200 miles used a full tank of gas!!) after driving it around a few more miles since (around town about 60 miles) the fuel gauge has dropped to just under 3/4 full. The raw gas smell is gone we can drive with the sunroof open and windows down now without being choked with raw gas smell !! Hopefully that was all it needed. No codes have came back, car runs smoother than ever. I will post any further change in the future.

*Before the cleaning: We were filling up every three to four days and driving only 200 miles at most before empty.

*After the cleaning: We filled up Thanksgiving morning and have put around 260 miles since fill up and the fuel gauge is at half tank !!! looks like the gas hog has went on down the road !!!
