3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I recently visited my local Toyota dealership and they cut me a new key based upon the VIN. The key is slightly different from what I was given with the car. It will operate the ignition, but the doors and trunk are out. The original key is way more worn than the new one. Does anyone have any ideas as to getting the new key to function, please?
The new key should match the old key (less wear) in the cut section. If it does not, I would go back or seek the services of a competent locksmith for a duplicate.
By "It" I mean the old key will open everything, doors & trunk. It will also operate the ignition. The new key only operates the ignition. Fat lot of good that'll do me if I lock my keys in the car. I guess it's back to the dealer to cut a duplicate to what I have, not from the VIN.
it definitely sounds as though they cut the "valet" key. one valet key was provided, along with two standard keys and one metal key tag when the Camry was sold new.
Why go to the dealer? Just go to your local hardware store and have them cut a key using the old key that works. Plus it will probably be half the price.

I tried, and the local hardware store does not carry the blank for my key.
Making a copy of a half worn-out key isn't as good as one cut at the dealer off the VIN. I did that recently for my Avy, and it wasn't that expensive; under $10 for sure. They just messed up and cut you a valet key, I'm betting. Go back and ask them to redo it. If they're halfway decent, they'll do it for free.
