Fuel Issue Resolved, Finally!
I've been trying to resolve the fuel vapor leak I've had for the last 8 months. For almost that long, I thought it might be too complicated for me to repair, so I lived with the smell.
Finally went to the dealer, and I thought there was a gasket under the pump that had 8 holes in it. WRONG!!! Stupid me, I had ordered the correct gasket all along. Just a flat rubber gasket. I went down to the dealer and picked up the gasket this morning, drove into N. Austin to pick up a Delphi sock, I figured it would be a good thing to replace since I was pulling the pump anyway. Never occurred to me to pick up the sock from the Toy dealer. Oh well, it was $9.50, no big deal.
Before I got started, I just laid down a garbage bag in the back seat area, to prevent that black mastic on the service hole cover from going everywhere.
BTW, the bolts are 8MM. Didn't want to risk stripping the Phillips slots.
Grabbed hand portable FE just in case, you never know.
Disconnect neg battery cable.
Remove rear seat cushion.
Pulled the service cover.
Used air compressor to blow debris from fuel pump cavity.
Broke all the bolts loose.
Went around front, and disabled the EFI. Engine never did run, she just cranked.
Back in car, removed 2 bolts for fuel line cover. Disconnected fuel pump electrical connection. Pushed tabs inward on fuel line and disconnected. Fuel ran out, but not a great deal of it.
Removed rest of the bolts. (Mag bowl works well here.)
Pulled fuel set plate.
Opened fuel cap to vent pressure.
Wiggled pump loose. (it was stuck slightly)
Tilted pump slightly to clear float arm, and worked pump out of tank. Placed it in 5 gallon bucket.
Off to the shed.
I have the Type A pump, according to the FSM. Very simple.
I didn't want to disturb the pump too much...it would be my luck, the pump will die in a few days.
Pushed the bottom of the pump out of the bracket enough to clear the rubber cushion.
Remove cushion.
Use small flat blade to work clip up from strainer. Had to pry on strainer a bit to get it loose from the pump intake.
Installed new strainer. reused old clip.
Reinstall rubber cushion, pushed pump back into bracket.
Installed new gasket. Back to car.
Tilted pump to clear sender float, it went into tank first. maneuvered pump around until it was lined up with fuel line. Grabbed the fuel tank set plate.
Started all the bolts except the ones for the fuel line cover, by hand only.
Installed fuel line cover and bolts.
Criscross pattern for all bolts. Snug.
Tighten all bolts til they were snug plus a bit more.
Connect electricals.
Install gas cap previously removed.
Reconnected neg battery cable and EFI fuse.
Hit the key, turn to ON only. Few seconds later, turned ignition OFF.
Turned key to start, engine fires, all is good. Sat in rear and watched pump to make sure no leaks. All dry.
Reinstall service hole cover. Clean up any gunk present.
Reinstall bottom seat cushion (seat belt buckes are a pain in the butt!)
DONE!!!
Hope this helps somebody, sorry for no pics.
Have a nice holiday, TN folks!
