95 Camry 4cyl engine mount opinion wanted

Hi all,

95 Camry wagon 4 cyl Auto. 184,000 mi

Had the usual shaking in idle under load and in neutral. Replaced the dog bone about a year ago, which helped a bit. Vibration got worse recently so I just replaced the front and transmission engine mounts which has helped a lot. There is still a little low vibration. I was wondering if it could be that the dog bone got damaged after over a year of driving with it being the only good mount, and needs to be replaced, or if I need to replace the rear mount. From what I've heard, the rear mount does not go bad very often, and if it does, it really only causes a thunk when changing gears (I've got no thunk), but does not affect the vibration much. I'd rather not spend the $ and the time replacing the rear (as it is more expensive, and more difficult) just to find out it was the dog bone. So, if anyone has and opinion, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

These engines have always vibrated. If its really little, then I'd forget about it. Since you have a Gen 3.5, did you replace your old dogbone with a Gen 4 dogbone? They knew about these vibrations and made them larger.

Thank you for your reply. I'm sure I got the proper part for the year, so not the thicker one. Perhaps it would be worth a try. The vibration isn't terrible. It's still a bit better in neutral. Is there one mount in particular that dampens the vibration?

I4 engines are like that (flaw in the design). If your dogbone has cracks in it or is gone, I'd say to replace it. If not, leave it as is until its due to be replaced.

I did the dogbone upgrade. It was not very cheap. I am too lazy to look for the brackets for the next year model. It did allow me to use thebeefier dogbone. The improvemnet was marginla at best. I am still glad I fdid it as it makes better engineering sense. I am not convinced you can eliminate it without doing the entire engine overhaul and looking at engine balancer free play.
