3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Left the lights on the other night and battery went dead. Needed a new one anyways. Got a new battery, installed, and still won't start. It wants to! But keep turning. Its a 97 Camry 2.2 4 cylinder. I have had it broken into, ever since then I have had electrical issues. Right now, the headlights work, the inside light works, the alarm system clicks on and off, and thats about it. The radio, power windows and locks do not work. I don't get it. I had the timing belt changed about a year ago. The stereo is aftermarket, and ever since I had the first one stolen, the dash lights do not work. I have had it looked at by a few shops and they can't figure it out. Thanks so much for the help in advance!
I will keep that in mind. It makes sense. I did drive the car about 20,000 miles since it had been broken into, though. I was told to also try the fuses? The anti theft thing makes more sense due to the fact that the windows, locks, radio, and car won't start. Guess I should have it towed to my local yoda dealership huh?! Thanks for the response BTW!
Yes. That is exactly how it looks. I am guessing the next thing you will say to me is to have it reset? I hope so. I called my local dealership and they haven't called me back yet for pricing. Any ideas?
That alarm system, my friend, is the Securikey Plus, made by Audiovox. Not Toyota. The regional distributor in the South, Gulf States Toyota, installed those systems en masse on Camries coming into the Houston port, due to high theft rates at the time.
Pop the hood, open the fuse and relay box, and pull the fuse marked Horn. This keeps the horn from blasting.
Disconnect the NEG terminal from the battery, wait 5 sec. Reconnect it.
You'll see your parking lights flashing, and hear a loud clicking sound.
Press the unlock button on your remote to disarm and reset the alarm. Push twice to unlock all doors.
Put the horn fuse back and close the relay box cover, shut the hood.
Done.
If it still acts stupid, you might have a defective system, and will have to have it permanently disabled, as there are no replacement parts for it any longer.
Look around on the web, sometimes you can find the programming manual for the system. You can also call Gulf States Toyota, just Google for the phone number. I called them once, and they were very helpful.
I was able to get it started. There were 3 blown fuses. BUT, while started, I could not put it in drive, the power locks and windows would not, and the radio and lights were dead. Thank you so much for the reply! I will do this first thing in the a.m. I hope it works, it sounds like you are a pro with this! Even if it doesn't I sure do appreciate your help!
I have been able to drive the car for the past week...with no dash lights, no gauges, no radio, no power locks or windows. pretty much everything I took for granted un the car! HA! Anyways, it is dead again. It started, but seems like the alternator isn't charging the battery. I don't think that would cause all of the other issues. I was hoping to get 250k miles out of it, but seems like I may be looking for something new soon...any last ideas?!
