1MZ problems. Please help

I have recently been having problems with my car starting.

When I try to start it, it usually clicks but doesnt crank. It also hums if I keep turning the key. It usually takes about 10-12 tries before it fully starts. I dont understand what is the problem

The only weird thing is that if my engine is hot, majority of the time it will start. I have been having these problems for about 2-3 months, but it has gotten worse recently. Anything you guys say will greatly help me and I greatly appreciate it.

I heard that it might be a starter problem, if that is the case does anyone have a link on how to properly change a starter for a 1MZ. I drive a 95 Avalon but I bet you guys are more active than that forum.

Thanks guys.

Shouldn't be too hard to remove the starter. Take a little peek and there should be 2 or 3 bolts holding it on.

I'd take a stab at worn starter motor solenoid contacts.

Start with making sure your battery terminal connections, and engine ground, are clean & tight. Turn on dome light, and report what happens to light when you (try to) crank.

I know 2 very simple reasons for clicking (relays are doing it, but car is not cranking):

a) check battery voltage with any cheap multi-meter before trying to crank the cold car. it should read above 11V (optimally around 12.4V), however my 1mz is able t start up (barely) even around 10V ...

b) make sure the terminals are clean and tight and I mean all bolts. there is one specific starter wire which sits on top of positive terminal, make sure it's clean and tight <- this one was giving me same problems on wife's 5s-fe car some time ago, was just a loose bolt.

c) other than that it could be the starter, but I think giving it a solid blow with a hammer (via some metal extension to avoid collateral) while someone is cranking, should make it able to start the engine up. if that's the case, then rebuild or replace the starter (get the Denso re-manufactured one if replacing).

I took out the starter and replaced the worn starter motor solenoid contacts which fixed my starting problem which sounds similar to yours. It went really smooth and saved quite a bit of money. Instead of swapping the starter I just opened it and changed the contacts.

There are a couple of repair threads in the FAQ sticky.

DIY--Replace Solenoid Contacts and Plunger on 00 Camry V6

I used this same OEM kit which I found on ebay. The lady sent me two and did not want the return. Send me a PM and I could put it on ebay for you or something.
