2001 Camry Dashboard Gear Indicator- Missing?

Just acquired a 2001 Camry CE. What I found odd is that there is no dashboard gear indicator light that is found between the temperature and fuel gauge. All the pictures I have seen have one. I even checked to see if perhaps a light was out but there is nothing there but a solid black area. Has this been left out on this particular car, or is there not supposed to be on there?

CE probally did not come with it. CE came stock with a regular antenna and a couple odds and ends that were different. I think by 01 they had standard power locks and mirrors though.

It does have power windows and locks. The antenna is built in. Every picture I see of the CE, though, has the gear indicator display on the dashboard.

Is it Automatic or manual? Manuals don't have the gear light strip. If its an automatic, i don't know what to say... Every automatic cam 4th gen i've seen has the gear light strip.

dashboard gear indicator

I have a 2001 Camry CE that I bought new and it does not have a dashboard gear indicator. Pretty sure they came from the factory without it.

Is your car a manual or automatic? I was thinking that perhaps they mistakenly put on the manual dash plate instead of the automatic one.

At least I know I am not the only one without it.

Could be, but odd they would leave something like that out, even on a less expensive model.

Maybe you could swap in a cluster from a non-CE model...

Could, but I just wanted to know if it was standard not to have it on the CE.

4th Generation

My 99 CE has no dash indicator, just on the floor shifter. My 99 LE had a dash shift indicator on the dash and one on the floor shifter.

Thanks for the info. I looked at the manual and it even shows the gear shift dashboard indicator. Strange that Toyota made it an upgrade feature.

Maybe it has to do with either being manufactured in the US or in Japan? My 99 LE was made in Japan, my 99 CE in the U.S.

Hmmmmm Interesting point! How do you check to see where it was made? So far, in this thread, there are now three people who have CE's that do not have the dash indicator.
