Check Engine Light, Strange noises and sounds... Advice?

I don't have a whole lot to go on here because once I started noticing stuff I parked it at a friends house. At the moment it's midnight, and raining so I can't see squat. But here's what I know...

  • It's been raining all day and earlier today I thought I saw very little smoke coming out from the grille. I looked while parked and couldn't see anything. I could see very little and random times while idling at a light. It was so faint that I figured it was steam from the cold rain.

  • Just a few minutes ago a friend and I were driving back from the grocery store when I started to notice that she seemed to be sounding very strangely. We paused the music and tried to listen over the rain.

  • A few seconds after I noticed the sounds the check engine light came on.

  • Right after that it started to smell like burning (rubber?)
At this point it's parked in front of his house and I plan on calling AAA tomorrow and having it towed to the garage. That being said, does anyone have any thoughts?

This car has been absolutely fantastic to me, and I want to keep it that way.

Thanks!

The OP has a 1996 Camry Wagon

1)the first thing to do is to check your timing belt. if that is ok then ->

2) get a codereader/scanner and read the codes. then post the code #'s here

3) create a detailed signature of your car so everyone can see what you have. this will help in the DX process
