wits end about engine swap diagnosis

99 cali motor into 98 fed celica
cali injectors,EGR tube
fed throttle body, CPS, CKS, intake, coil packs timing sprocket.
car kept dying out untill it got hot, found out my federal EGR tube had a hole in it and so i swapped out for the cali tube with new gasket, now it idles at 5.3k. throttle plate fully closed.
ive been on this car for 2 months diagnosing it and everything was a dead end, now i have the problem solved and its idling at 5.3k. i dont even know WHY a car would idle at that rpm and not waver, its dead on 5.3 not moving.

any help is golden, really. name anything and ill check it. i cant even look at the damn car anymore.

If the throttle plate is fully closed and the engine idles at 5300 rpms then there is a big air leak somewhere. Maybe use a smoke machine test or tape up the throttle body and use compressed air to check for leaks.

Is the idle air control valve's air bypass hose in place?

the hose seen here is in place, along with all the other hoses attached to the throttle according to mr_perkins writeup.
i do have my compressor back from a friend, where should i inject air into the system to find the leak? the brake booster nipple?

Tape up the throttle body opening. Sure that would work.

can cars even operate with an idle leak that large? does it have the ability to compensate for that?

Wow that's really really really high.

Um... try a different IAC for shiggles and gits? If the previous poster's suggestions don't do it.

If the throttle plate is fully closed the ECU should be getting signal from TPS to open IAC to control idle. I'm also skeptical that he'd get 5300 rpm from closed throttle plate and IAC control.

So, once again i disassembled everything, reassembled, and then started it up, idles at 5k still.
i put my hand over the throttle body and plugged it up 100% the damn thing still idles, though normally, so somewhere its getting the air to get reved up and then the engine vacuum is pulling the throttle body open i think.

i did replace the EGR tube because the one i got off the old motor was leaking and the bolts were seized on. so i just switched them out and it does idle about 300 lower. so i just need to find 4k of rpm worth of vacuum leak.

tomorrow im hooking up my air compressor to the engine and ill find out where its coming from.
