Thumbs up Sylvania Silverstar ULTRAs - WOW!

Seriously, seriously impressed with these...

http://www.sylvania.com/ConsumerProd...uctComparison/

Had been running the "regular" Silverstars until one blew out (after I think 3 years). Hated having to buy two bulbs but decided to take advantage of the situation and upgrade to the ULTRAs. 20% off (online) coupon at Advance Auto meant I got the set for ~$36 OTD.

The chart above claims these are brighter than the regular Silverstars and based on my unscientific observation THEY ARE RIGHT. I just drove 150+ miles in the rain at night and these things were FANTASTIC, noticeably better than the Silverstars. On HIGH BEAM they are UTTERLY INSANE. I am going to have to take some pics on a clear night with no cars on the road but I swear they lit up anything reflective but especially road signs from distances I've never thought possible.

Keep in mind this is on a 1997 Camry with 217k miles and cheapie (non-OEM) lenses. I haven't been this happy with a headlight upgrade for YEARS.

YMMV, this is just one opinion, yadda yadda yadda, but I just had to share. These things ROCK!

I have the regular Sylvania Silverstar 9006's. Whiter than stock and good enough for me.

So no one has flashed at you yet? Reason I ask, I drive a long dark 2 lane hwy with constant traffic coming at me. (and the possibility of deer)
My 00 Tundra still has the stock bulbs, and quite frankly, your post intrigues me. I like the idea of the upgrade.
What about the fogs? Something better for those too? I just don't want to blind anybody coming at me.

I've had a pair of those before. They did seem better, BUT they also burnt out much faster. I put 6-7k per year on my car, and they died in less than a year (a month or two apart from each other).

I've put in one of the bulbs I had in before these Sylvanias, and it has been working for a few years now (plus a year or two they were working before I "upgraded")

Just an fyi.

DOT approved bulbs and headlamps has a cutoff line that prevent glare into other drivers. The Sylvania (OEM for many) meets these DOT standards and will never cause trouble. The problem is when people install poorly aimed HID/headlights, install brighter fake "xexon" light blubs, having HIDs without a ballast, or on their high beams. "Fogs" lights today are just really additional driving lights and it help illuminate the road surface better. True fog lights are yellow.

Having the lights aim correctly is the key.

Without these better bulbs, 9003 would be lame. The hotter bulbs do burn out quicker so keep your old bulbs as trunk spares.

Philips XtremePower are also excellent.

I've also used the IPF 4x41's. The overwattage definitely makes up for faded yellow lens.

And, the Osram Rallye which also help with my faded lens:

9005 can take a modded HIR 9011
9006 can take a modded HIR 9012
H11 can take a modded H9

Plenty of good upgrade bulbs that'll keep oncoming traffic happy since your not playing around with lens or reflectors when compared to all the hack HID kits that so many use.

Hirs are nice. But for an each switch use the bulbs that the OP stated. Direct swap and great improvement.
