Engine Stumbles when shifting @ WOT

I've noticed this from time to time as I have stomped on the gas for WOT acceleration from a start. When the car shifts from 1st to second, the the engine seems to stumble, or pause. Maybe only for 1/2 sec. or so, but it defininately cuts to some degree. Odd thing is, is only does it when the car is left in "D", if I manually shift the car and hold it to the same or higher RPM, it does'nt do it and shifts quite firmly into 2nd without a pause or stumble. Anyone know anything about this, or has had similar symptoms?

Sorry Edit: Gen3, 3VZ-FE, auto.

It's normal, to some degree. I think the ECU is trying to "soften" the auto upshifts to provide a cushier driving experience. And like you say, if you shift manually it shifts much firmer. Not sure exactly what it's doing?... cutting fuel?... retarding ignition timing? I dunno.

My F150 does it really bad.

I wondered if this might be a part of the normal shifting behavior. I was just reading a little piece on Toyota ECT transmissions, and it mentioned that the engine timing was retarded (actually really stupid) when shifting in auto-mode, on shifting. It's nice to know that this is a fairly common characteristic, and that my perception of much better performance with manual shifting is not totally in my head.

I'm still sifting through the details of this stuff, just found it, but I think your right about this being normal.

This is what I was reading: http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h16.pdf

Sorry about that, ^ is the correct link to what I was reading on Toyota ECT transmissions. It takes a bit of reading and thinking, but you do get a good view of how they operate under different conditions, and maybe some hints on how to alter their operation with electronic (piggyback type) , intercept modifications.

I wonder if you could trick the transmission into engaging the torque converter "lock-up", shortly after launching the car from a stop? It might gain some of the efficiency of a manual transmission in putting power to the wheels. Then again, it might just blow-up the transmission when it shifts to second or third gear, because the shifts would be to hard?

Just thinking and dreaming...
