2001 Camry LE Fast Idle on Start Up.

Mom's 2001 4 cyl. is idling fast at start up.
She says she can drive up our block without using the gas pedal.
It's a residential street so I can't see it doing that many mph. or she would brake.

What could it be?

The car has 39,000 miles on it and has been kept up.... (not as good as I keep up mine but I'm OCD)

Mine idles up to about 2k rpm and stays there (in park) for quite a bit especially sinces its been at or below freezing in the morning. If your mother is just putting it drive right after start up then even in gear the idle will still be at about 1200rpm. And an idle at 1200 will most definitly move you faster down the road than a 750rpm warm idle.

High idle is normal on a cold engine in order to heat up the o2's to operating temp.

And on the other hand, if your mothers car is idling at like 2000rpm in gear going down the street then yes you would most definatly have a problem...

You can remove the air duct and partially duck tape IAC inlet hole. Start it up in the morning and if the rpm normal then you need new IAC which cost about $200-300.

^ thats a good little trick.

all of my camrys have done the same (3), what RPM is is sitting at and for how long? When does it drop down? Mine would easily drive itself and even have the power to make it to second gear but they were V6s.
