3rd Generation Need help timing 96 LE (2.2 4 cyl)

Hi all, our 96 Camry LE broke(2.2 4cyl) it's timing belt which my son and I are about to change. I have been referred to the "GEN3 Timing Belt + Water Pump + Oil Seal Change Parts 1 & 2" and it provides an enormous amount of help. I do have a couple of questions on setting the timing. #1) Since in our case the timing belt broke while driving, am I correct in assuming that the timing is off and will need to be re-timed. In the "GEN3 Timing" etc example, (step 27) it shows using liquid paper, to apply match marks to the camshaft timing pulley and crankshaft timing pulley. But in the pictures it shows them marking on the timing belt as well. What do you do if the timing belt came off? #2) In step 41 it shows removing the oil seal. Is this needed if we replace the oil pimp oring/gasket? #3) In steps #47 it shows lining the crankshaft pulley "V" notch up with "0" on the timing belt lower cover. That doesn't seem too difficult. However in step #48 it shows the camshaft pulley & refers to the reflection in the mirror??? I am not clear what I should be looking for or what it should look like, or how to get it there. Also, what is the Top Dead Center referring to? I assume it has something to do with the #1 piston up at the top of the cylinder but what & how do I get that position? Is there a step-by step (with pics) that shows how to time the engine? Sorry to be such a pain but I want a good understanding about what needs to be done here, & how to time the engine correctly so it starts. Thanks in advance for all assistance

Haynes Manual would have made it easier. You didn't provide link to DIY.

Only need to mark timing belt if re-using old one.

Which oil seal? Replace all the seals; crank, cam, oil pump. Maybe even water pump.

Look through the hole in the pulley to the "V" notch using a mirror as you can't line it up properly without a mirror. Make sure you're looking at it square and not at an angle.

TDC of #1 piston (the front one) as shown on the crank pulley against the 0 mark on the cover. I also think there is a mark on the crankshaft pulley. Piston will be at the top of it's travel. You can't loop timing belt around cam pulleys if the crank pulley is not at TDC. You need to align all three pulleys to their marks. Then rotate at least two times and re-check.

3rd Generation Need help timing 96 LE (2.2 4 cyl)

Thanks for the quick reply. The link to the DIY is: DIY: GEN3 Timing Belt + Waterpump + Oil Seal Change - Part 2 It has a link to part #1 on the top of the thread. Anyway, it is a very good step by step which will be lots of help. So, if I am putting on a new timing belt(the old one shredded & off) then am I correct in assuming that I don't need to mark anything?? (like they show in step #27 pictures). If you look at the link(If I was able to post it correctly) and go to step #41, they show removing the oil pump drive rotor and driven rotor to remove the seal behind it. I am wondering if I don't do this step, if I will have any problems since I will be replacing the oil pump oring gasket? As to the picture in step #48, is there a "V" notch on the camshaft as well? You will see a note/edit from April 4th 2010 that says: "that the proper mark (V-Notch) is at the 12:00 position with respect to the vertical axis of the engine." I am not sure what they mean by this statement. Just wondering what the steps would be to time the engine if I was starting with no belt on. Once again I appreciate any and all help!!

The oil pump shaft seal is on the outside of the cover. The oil pump does not run on a seal on the inside. Replace the oil pump shaft seal and the cover o-ring. Make sure you put lithium rebuild grease on the oil pump gears before assembly. The "V" notch does not turn, only the hole in the pulley. Once you get it apart you'll see that. It will be pretty much self explanatory with the DIY.
