timing belt replacement

What is the recommended interval for timing belt replacement in a 99 camry LE 4 cylinder?

How much should it cost with a dealer?

With an independent shop?

What parts if any should you buy direct from toyota? Is just the belt okay?

Thanks...

6 years or 90000 miles recommended by Toyota on your car.

Dealer or Independent= Expensive due to amount of work involved plus parts.

6-year/90K-mile is the recommendation. But the engine doesn't have an automatic tensioner and IMO 5-year/60K mile interval is better. If your 99 is still on the original timing belt then timewise you're overdue.

The book rate for timing belt itself is about 3 hours. So if the shop charges $60/hr then it's $180 labor. Maybe add another hour for oil seals and the water pump.

Besides the belt I'd at least change out the water pump. But it's best to change out the following parts while the timing area is apart. I used an aftermarket parts list from rockauto, but you can buy OEM parts online or from a TN sponsor like ToyotaPartsMan.

GATES K030295 Micro-V AT Power Steering Belt $5.14
GATES K050435 Micro-V AT Alt/AC Belt $14.10
FEL-PRO TCS45920 Crankshaft Front Seal Set $5.10 (includes pump o-ring)
FEL-PRO TCS45641 Camshaft Front Seal $3.66
NATIONAL 221820 Polyacrylate Oil Pump Shaft Seal $2.86
GATES TCK199 (1 Belt, 1 Tensioner, 1 Idler) Timing Belt Component Kit
$52.89
STANT 48278 180° w/Jiggle Pin OE Type Thermostat $10.94
AISIN WPT010A Water pump w/o housing $30.79
FEL-PRO VS50304R1 Valve Cover Gasket Set w/Spark plug tube seals
$18.26
Subtotal $143.74
Shipping about $20

While you are there it is a good idea to change the coolant with the red one and use distilled water to top it up with. Drain the transmission and differential while you are at it and refill with the correct fluid, believe it is Dextron III(best to verify). Just did the above and this, and the mechanic said my belt was like new at 175k km. Changed the idler or tensioner spring also. This was the suggestion of the partsman at the dealership.
