95 Camy 1MZ-FE hesitation at WOT

I have a 95 Camry 1MZ-FE -- once the engine is warm (up to operational temp) if I hit the gas and get the RPM's past 4,000 -- there is a big hesitation /like a misfire. The car surges/ hesitates rapidly (like machine gun)-- it seems like it wants to go but does not. If I get off the gas and go back to under 4,000 RPM car runs fine. Idles fine -- plenty of power -- only a problem under load past 4,000 rpm. No codes being thrown or pending. Plugs changed 32,000 ago -- gas mileage 26 MPG on highway -- at 80 MPH

This would be fine but if you have to pass another car -- is a big problem.

Any ideas on how to find the problem -- where to start.

First guess is air filter needs changing. To test, try taking the filter out and see if that fixes it.

Second guess is fuel pump is marginal.

Thanks for the fast reply

Thanks for the fast reply -- I will check both.

Found one bit of info -- The 94-96 1MZs use a vacuum modulated EGR system that cuts off at 4100-4200 RPM. I believe the EGR VSV vents to atmosphere during that time to bypass the EGR system? Not sure if this is correct?
