3rd Generation Which type of shaft on a gen 3.5 automatic?

As the title saw I'm wondering what type of shaft is on the shifter for a 95 camry automatic. I going to replace the oem shift knob with a carbon fiber one from obx. That instruction that I recevied includes for a toyota including those with a round, oval and square shaft. The instructions vary by the shape so I want to know before I start.

It's round. Consider cutting the shaft and lock out rod shorter too. Otherwise your custom shifter may end up looking like a high performance dildo.

Consider including more details in your title, like the type of shat your looking for too. "shifter shaft" would likely have gotten an anwser sooner.

3rd Generation

This is the shifter I got. I figured out through other pages that it was round it doesnt look too bad. Shorter then the stock shifter. I'll probably make it shorter when I decide to connect the od button (when its warmer).

Question. When making the shaft shorter, I can basicly just cut right through the inner and outer shaft and just reinstall everything and it will work fine?

No, it's not that simple. The outer shaft only needs to be long enough to securely support the shifter knob itself. The inner part must have enough exposed to allow the lock out button to travel fully without bottoming out on outer shaft. I cut the outer shaft an inch lower than the inner one to make sure it all worked. When you shorten it you also want to measure the height with the shifter in L1. That way youll be sure to allow free travel of the shifter through all of the positions.

I will say that if it were me, I'd plan on shortening it from the get go. The shifter you have there is not as tall as the stock one, but since you are removing the stock one and that shifter will just sit on top of the existing parts, there will be about 2 inches of bare ugly naked metal under the shifter and it will look shitty (no other way to say it). It looks so much nicer and more professional if you just cut it short at the beginning.

I didn't cut anything, and as you can see the new shifter, which is pretty much the same as the one you have is already shorter than stock.

You see how your shifter ends nearly 2 inches above the base, on my shift knobs, that looked bad. Now, on my shifters they didnt come with anything on the bottom. I see you have or made something which definatly looks better but it is still too tall, it would look better if you got all that as close to the slide cover as possible. Said then when ya first did it.

For it to really looks good, you really either have to caut it short OR do what some factorys do and actually put a boot on there, that looks even better I think.
