3rd Generation Remove Front Driveaxle nut

95 Camry V6 Auto

I am trying to remove the front drive axle nuts but they will not budge. I tried a large 1/2 inch breaker bar and then a 650 ft lb impact driver both to no avail. I can not loosen either side. Yes I removed the cotter pins and lock nut.

Anybody know the secret to getting these things loose?

Are they rusty?... use some penetrating oil, like PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench.

I use a 1/2" breaker bar and add a 2 foot long pipe to that. And then I stand & bounce on it to break them loose.

to get mine off I put 3 lugs on the lug nuts, wedged a long bar between them to create a solid resistance that contacted with the frame of the car or a part of the suspension. from there I used, as BMR said, penetrating oil a half inch breaker and a metal tube to get more torque. Impact guns, unless uber industrial, are seldom successful on such old stuff.

Bigger Breaker Bar

I guess I need a bigger breaker bar and a big piece of pipe. They are not rusty but I have sprayed them with penetrating oil twice and let it sit over night. How did you keep the socket from slipping off the nut?

After spraying the threads with oil, hit the nut with a rag sprayed with break cleaner. That will remove the oil for teh most part and make it easier to keep the socket on the nut. That was the only way I found to keep it on. I had to apply a lot of force a few times to get it to finally brake, you just want to used as short a socket as possible and parallel to the hub as possible.

Awesome Help Guys

I got a six sided socket, a new NAPA 1/2" breaker and a 4 foot piece of pipe. I cleaned the nuts with brake cleaner and put some weight behind it and now they are both loose.

Thanks to everyone.
